(8,090 posts)Shouldn't DWS be doing SOMETHING to convince them to vote for Democrats? I mean, what the hell is she paid for? And wasn't it Kaine who gave us the all-inspiring Circle D logo? How'd that work out?
Dean understood we needed to reach out to voters who moved away from the Democratic Party. I forget his exact words, but it had to do with good ol' boys in trucks who are just as concerned about the economy as the rest of us. There is a MASSIVE pool of dissatisfied Americans the Democratic Party should be tapping into.
The conventions are nice and shiny, but what is the Democratic Party doing the off years to inspire voters?

What EXACTLY is it that the head of the DNC does, besides fundraise? What coherent message are we hearing from DWS's DNC, other than "open your wallets"?

(37,321 posts)...structure is responsible for making every effort to get Democratic voters to the polls? Or at least is responsible at the national level for coordinating state and local assets to do so?
Because if the answer is "nobody", then that's a problem right there, and it makes it DWS's problem that it hasn't been addressed.

(102,256 posts)You should check with the Democratic Party:
First elected to Congress in 2004, Rep. Wasserman Schultz has been a rising presence in the House and a tireless advocate for Democratic values. Prior to becoming Chair, Rep. Wasserman Schultz was DNC Vice Chair.
Rep. Wasserman Schultz became the Democratic National Committee Chair on May 4th, 2011.
https://www.democrats.org/person/debbie-wasserman-schultz
See, there's the problem - you're heavily involved in the Democratic Party, and I found that from a paid Google advertisement, just searching for "Democratic Party" "chair". The party is paying to get the message out about what she does, and the people working with it don't even have an idea! No wonder things aren't going smoothly.

(96,882 posts)She chairs the Democratic National Committee and helps set broad Party goals. She raises money. She acts as a conduit between the President, the Party and it's major supporters (Unions, advocacy groups etc.) She occasionally acts as a spokesperson for the Party. She works to build up and support State Parties.
What she does NOT do is select candidates (that's left up to the DSCC, DCCC, DGA and DLCC). Or decide what the Party's position is on national Policy (to the extent that anyone does, it's the President). Or act as the sole voice for the Party (again, the President takes the lead).
The complain is that she "lost" the 2014 Election. Now, I'll concur that she didn't find a way to address the off-year turnout problem, but neither did her predecessors. Beyond that, what exactly did she do that was wrong?
muriel_volestrangler
(102,256 posts)If she claims her job is to get Democrats elected, but it isn't, then she's misleading the voters. Not a good idea.
She has just blocked an attempt to advance Obama's agenda (on Iran, probably his signature foreign policy accomplishment). Not a good idea.
"She acts as a conduit between the President, the Party and it's major supporters (Unions, advocacy groups etc.)" - except, it seems, when she doesn't like what the President is doing. Not a good idea.
"What she does NOT do is select candidates" - leave your red herring out of this. No-one was saying she selected candidates. "that's left up to the DSCC, DCCC, DGA and DLCC" - I thought it happened through primaries.
" Or decide what the Party's position is on national Policy" - again, you're the only one here flogging that dead red herring.
I think what people are looking for is someone successful, like Howard Dean, at encouraging activity in the party. And not someone who blocks people who want to support the President.

Glenn Greenwald
theguardian.com, Friday 19 October 2012 20.38 EDT
On 29 May 2012, the New York Times published a remarkable 6,000-word story on its front page about what it termed President Obama's "kill list". It detailed the president's personal role in deciding which individuals will end up being targeted for assassination by the CIA based on Obama's secret, unchecked decree that they are "terrorists" and deserve to die.
Based on interviews with "three dozen of his current and former advisers", the Times' Jo Becker and Scott Shane provided extraordinary detail about Obama's actions, including how he "por[es] over terrorist suspects' biographies on what one official calls the macabre 'baseball cards'" and how he "insist[s] on approving every new name on an expanding 'kill list'". At a weekly White House meeting dubbed "Terror Tuesdays", Obama then decides who will die without a whiff of due process, transparency or oversight. It was this process that resulted in the death of US citizen Anwar Awlaki in Yemen, and then two weeks later, the killing of his 16-year-old American son, Abdulrahman, by drone.
The Times "kill list" story made a huge impact and was widely discussed and condemned by media figures, politicians, analysts, and commentators. Among other outlets, the New York Times itself harshly editorialized against Obama's program in an editorial entitled "Too Much Power For a President", denouncing the revelations as "very troubling" and argued: "No one in that position should be able to unilaterally order the killing of American citizens or foreigners located far from a battlefield - depriving Americans of their due-process rights - without the consent of someone outside his political inner circle."
That Obama has a "kill list" has been known since January, 2010, and has been widely reported and discussed in every major American newspaper since April 2010. A major controversy over chronic White House leaks often featured complaints about this article (New York Times, 5 June 2012: "Senators to Open Inquiry Into 'Kill List' and Iran Security Leaks" . The Attorney General, Eric Holder, gave a major speech defending it.
But Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Democratic Congresswoman from Florida and the Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, does not know about any of this. She has never heard of any of it. She has managed to remain completely ignorant about the fact that President Obama has asserted and exercised the power to secretly place human beings, including US citizens, on his "kill list" and then order the CIA to extinguish their lives.

The October Surprise Was Real
by CARMELO RUIZ-MARRERO
CounterPunch, JULY 11, 2014
In January 1992 I published my first journalistic article ever. Published in Puerto Ricos Claridad weekly newspaper, it was titled The October Surprise. In it I affirmed that the 1980 Reagan-Bush campaign bargained secretly with Iranian radicals for the postponement of the liberation of 52 Americans that they were holding hostage. These hostages were employees of the US embassy in Irans capital city of Teheran, which had been stormed by militants loyal to the Ayatollah Khomeini in November 1979. This secret deal, known as the October Surprise, frustrated the attempts of US president Jimmy Carter to obtain the hostages release in time for the elections in November. This failure cost Carter his reelection, and swept Republican candidate Ronald Reagan into the presidency. Polls carried out before the election showed that the hostage issue was of top importance in the minds of the American electorate.
The Republican campaigns main negotiators in this deal were George H. W. Bush, vice presidential candidate and former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director, and William Casey, the campaigns director and veteran spook who spied for the Office of Strategic Services during World War Two. Once elected, president Reagan appointed Casey to direct the CIA.
The hostages were freed the same day Reagan was sworn in as his nations fortieth president on January 1981. What was in it for the Iranians? Weapons, tons of them. Iran needed them badly in order to repel an invasion by Iraq. The Iran-Iraq war lasted from 1980 to 1988 and took approximately one million lives. The much-publicized wars in Central America in those years positively pale in comparison to the horror and carnage of this Middle East war, which was almost certainly the bloodiest of that decade. The October Surprise conspiracy and the arms deals related to the Iran-Iraq war led to the Iran-Contra affair, the biggest political scandal of the 1980s.
This is very serious business: aiding and abetting a kidnapping, secretly undermining a presidents foreign policy- with the express purpose of tilting election results at home, high treason. You could fry in the electric chair for less than this.

If the nation's news media did their job, this would all be front page news: The Carter Administration was sabotaged from within by Traitors who would foist Reagan, Bush, another Bush and who knows what else upon America in the form of left behind molery through the three branches of government. Certainly Treason should not be the second story to Kimandkanyelina.
PS: Like a field of poppy covered commas, bending and waving in waves of red; each frigging green blade of grass says during the hurricane: "There is much power in the wind. And it's free."
