(34,107 posts)nobody called it Mt. McKinley, it was always called Denali. I tried to get a photo of it but you apparently rarely see all of it like this. Beautiful. I am so happy it is back to being called Denali officially.

(25,406 posts)The only person I heard saying Mount McKinley was an old lady with a tour from a cruise ship (but she pronounced it "McKidley"!)
When I was there camping in the park with my brother everyone called it Denali and it was marked on the map we had that way. About time it's officially recognized as such.

The state of Alaska has signified the mountain as Denali for many years as well, but the US official geographers did not change the mountain's name until Aug. 2015.
This Ohioan believes President McKinley can be honored by other means, and already has numerous sites, schools, etc. named in his honor.

(7,809 posts)Denali is a much better name. It's good that they changed it.

But the indigenous Alaskans have dibs.
And Denali is an awesome name.

(54,369 posts)My wife and have been exploring Alaska for the last week, and just arrived near Denali today.
Pure coincidence with the timing, of course.

(12,583 posts)I'd still be there if it wasn't how my mind reacted to the constant winter darkness (SAD). The aurora was worth it, though..
What I find fascinating is that Denali is so centrally located in the state that it can be seen from both Fairbanks and Anchorage, which are 300 miles apart.

(51,550 posts)This mountain, our nation's highest peak, was always called Denali by the local native peoples. It means "the Great One" and is very sacred to them.
But we renamed it Mt. McKinley in honor of an utterly forgetable President who never set foot in Alaska.
It is about time we honored the native people in Alaska, not to mention the mountain itself, which deserves to be called Denali, being our highest mountain.

(1,958 posts)But that was before 1975. We didn't see the mountain because of smoke.
About 15 years ago, my parents were there and the view was spectacular. They chartered an airplane and flew around Denali for two hours. There are porta-potties one of the glaciers where the climbers start out.

(51,550 posts)Seems like a pretty good name for a mountain that is North America's tallest.
We should have never changed its name to name it after President McKinley, who never set foot in Alaska. It really offended the locals and they've been pushing to have it changed back ever since.
