But as I get older, pictures like this impact my emotions to a greater degree. Almost to tears.

I don't know why, either. I wonder if it's accrued wisdom - you know, a better understanding overall of how interconnected living things really are? Or whether I was just too busy in my younger days to notice, although I'm busier now, it seems.

I know one thing, though, and that is that I am happier with myself now that things like this DO affect me. I think I've evolved!

You may be on to something. At 63, I'm Much more aware of my connection to all things. It still makes me sad.

I cannot get through any of those ASPCA commercials. I have to cast my eyes away. Suffering means more to me now that I'm older.

I'm in my late fifties, and I agree about the suffering. I do animal rescue, actually, and I have learned the hard way that sometimes I simply have to take a break and walk away for a while to be able to come back and deal with all of torment that I see.

I also believe that it's hard for those of us who would NEVER intentionally cause suffering to understand or believe that there are others out there who simply delight in causing it.

my empathy has grown a lot. When I was young I was a selfish piece of shit. Now, I can put myself in that pic and feel how horrible of a life that bear must have.

For example-

I can name several billion people whom their life matters more than this piece of shit below. (Correct me if I used "whom" wrong please )

Man guilty of raping one-day-old baby boy

Stuart Young preyed on the children between November 2008 and December 2013 at various locations in Edinburgh.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard the attacks on the one-day-old boy continued until he was aged three months.
A jury convicted Young on two charges of rape and another of sexual assault. Sentence was deferred.
The week-long trial heard how, in November 2008, Young raped a girl who was aged just six months.

Granted, that particular life ought to be lived in prison for the rest of that person's natural life.

and to those who are "different", that rather bad habit of identifying others as "less than".

a feeling that came to the fore when the dentist killed Cecil the Lion, for instance.
