Lucas Eibel, an 18-year-old quadruplet who studied chemistry and loved animals, was among those killed during a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College on Thursday, authorities have confirmed.
Eibel's family released a short statement through the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
"We have been trying to figure out how to tell everyone how amazing Lucas was, but that would take 18 years," the family wrote. "Lucas loved FFA, volunteering at Wildlife Safari, and Saving Grace animal shelter."
He was a dog walker from 2010 to 2012, the animal shelter said.
Leila Goulet of Wildlife Safari said Eibel spent the summer of 2014 participating in the park's in Junior Zookeeper program.
"We all love him here," she said.
Eibel had a calm, level-headed disposition, making him perfect for working with animals, Goulet said. He mostly assisted with reptiles and small mammals, but he was so willing to help out, he ended up taking on tasks in other areas of the park, too.
"He was a super kind-hearted kid," she said.
Megan Dilson, the faculty advisor for the Roseburg chapter of the FFA, a group that promotes leadership and agricultural skills, said, "Lucas was one of the best students our FFA Chapter had."
"I am so devastated by his loss," she wrote in a brief email.
Eibel was studying chemistry at Umpqua Community College and had recently received two scholarships, the family said. He graduated Roseburg High School with "high academic marks," they said.
...Root remembers Eibel as perhaps the quietest sibling, but unequivocally nice and described that way by his siblings.
That matches the impression of Taylor Moore, a freshman at Southern Oregon University who took a precalculus class with Eibel at Roseburg High School last year.
"He was really quiet at first," she said, "but when he opened up, he was very, very funny and very, very smart."

Thanks to your post, I looked up the animal rescue organization where he had volunteered and made a donation in his honor.

He looked like a very special person in that photo and the article confirmed it...what a loss.
