Liberty Counsel has released photos it says proves its client, Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis, met with Pope Francis during his U.S. visit. None of the photos shows Davis in the popes presence. The series of photos show Davis and her husband in a room surrounded by papal portraits. There is also a photo of rosary beads the pope is said to have given the couple ...Photos of Kim Davis alleged private meeting with Pope Francis released

This is very very exciting! There's a picture of a car and some guy (not the Pope), and a picture of some rosaries, and a picture of Kim beaming, and a picture of some guy (again not the Pope), and a picture of Kim and some guy (still not the Pope)! No picture of the Pope, though --- too busy taking blurry selfies! Well, maybe she could print out the photo I added and frame it

(53,776 posts)What are we, supposed to be stupid to look at photos anyone could take with their cell phone and think, okay, she had a private audience with the Pope without a picture of her with the Pope?

(95,337 posts)I do not doubt she was in his presence but the only person who had the private meeting was his former student who happened to bring his long term same sex partner. Kim was part of a large group that was ushered in, shook hands and received rosary beads.

Facts:
The Davis's were at the Papal embassy due to an invitation from the Papal Nuncio's office.
The Catholic Church considers sexual intercourse outside of marriage to be a sin and is also strongly opposed to gay marriage.
Pope Francis, back when he was Cardinal Bergolio, virulently opposed the legalization of gay marriage in Argentina with language that any reasonable person would regard as homophobic.
Pope Francis has at least one long term gay friend and warmly greeted the man and his long term partner while in Washington during a 20 minute private audience (there's video). This gay friend also remonstrated with the then Cardinal Bergolio over language he used during that gay marriage battle. According to his friend the Cardinal responded saying that there should be no place for homophobia in the Catholic Church.
Cardinal Viganò the Papal Nuncio was appointed by Pope Benedict as envoy to the US. There is no dispute about Vigano's opinions on cultural issues. He is an arch conservative who has worked with evangelical Christians, including Davis's lawyer, to oppose gay marriage, abortion.
Cardinal Viganò was appointed Nuncio after ruffling highly placed feathers in the Vatican hierarchy when he served as Benedict's point man in a fruitless effort to clean up the Vatican.

Disputed Facts:
Davis claims she was personally invited by the Papal Nuncio who told her that the Pope supported her position and wanted to meet with her. The Vatican denies this.
Davis and her husband claim they had a 15 minute private audience. The Vatican denies this.
Questions
What did the Pope know and when did he know it?
Is this a conspiracy by the conservative culture warriors favored by his two predecessors to embarrass and undermine a slightly more liberal sounding Pope who wants them to focus on poverty, the environment and attracting former Catholics back to the Church?
Could this be an honest mistake by the Papal Nuncio who thought his boss would be thrilled to meet the lady who has become the symbol of the struggle for the "traditional family", "religious liberty" and "personal conscience" in the U.S.?
If he knew who she was, was the Pope actually thrilled to meet the lady who has become the symbol of the struggle for the "traditional family", "religious liberty" and "personal conscience" in the U.S. (He clearly supports all three. ) and only threw Viganò under the Popemobile after it became public.
Cardinal Viganò is a pretty unpopular guy in certain Vatican circles. The only person less popular in these circles is Pope Francis, who has made a good start of cleaning up the Vatican Bank and reforming the Curia. I wonder if this was a case of hardliners killing two birds with one stone.
Opinion:
Since in the only picture of the Pope in Davis's photo collection, he is clearly standing next to a guy with a microphone, it's pretty clear that this was a group setting. Davis's claim that she was sort of kept in a back room away from other people looks bogus. These sort of rosaries are basic Papal swag, something that anyone in a group audience would get. Ms. Davis had by her own account altered her appearance to deceive the media--this might also have deceived the Pope and his handlers. His reported comments to Davis, "stay strong" are pretty vague--for all we know he could have been told she was this nice lady whose parents were sick.
I really doubt that Yayo Grassi, the Pope's former student, who did have a private audience with the Pope would have released the video of Francis warmly greeting him and his partner, hell, would not have even been allowed to take pictures without the express permission of his good buddy the head of the Catholic Church.
At any rate, as a wannabe novelist and a fan of palace intrigue, I find this all absolutely fascinating.
Finally, some advice for the Pope. Watch your back, Frank.
