Someone is lying.
Representatives of Kim Davis -- the county clerk in Kentucky who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses -- say Pope Francis met privately with the Apostolic Christian and told her to "stay strong."
After a few days of silence -- and allowing Kim Davis' supporters all but say the Pope would vote her in as president of Kentucky -- the Vatican came out today with a denial of the meeting.
It also distanced the pope from Davis, saying Pope Francis merely met Davis in a group of people who were brought together in Washington D.C. for a brief meet-and-greet.

(45,319 posts)their philosophy but as long as they are the only reporters none of the reporting can be trusted. We do know the Vatican and Francis have very actively organized against marriage equality with US evangelicals on the right who are far worse than Kim Davis, this is a matter of public record. This means the nature of this particular meeting is of no real importance in terms of understanding the nature of the Vatican's relationship with the anti gay religious right. Davis is small fry.

When the Pope is having shindigs at the Vatican with Tony Perkins, NOM and the Heritage Foundation there is really no need to parse out Kim Davis when Family Research Council attends Vatican events by invitation to organize against marriage equality. These are established facts, known for nearly a year. Makes this whole spectacle look contrived and inherently disrespectful of the people whose rights are being used in this religious/political pandering championship.

A receiving line meet & greet sounds more plausible, but I wouldn't rule out what passes for a private audience.

(101,311 posts)The Vatican said he met many people that day, not that they were all in a group.
Pope Francis met with several dozen persons who had been invited by the Nunciature to greet him as he prepared to leave Washington for New York City. Such brief greetings occur on all papal visits and are due to the Popes characteristic kindness and availability. The only real audience granted by the Pope at the Nunciature was with one of his former students and his family.
The Pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects.
