The repeated, misleading claim that Planned Parenthood ‘provides’ mammograms

The repeated, misleading claim that Planned Parenthood ‘provides’ mammograms

By Michelle Ye Hee Lee at the Washington Post

"SNIP..............

Planned Parenthood’s annual report shows it gave 487,029 breast exam services for women in 2013. This is a clinical breast exam, checking for changes or lumps in women’s breasts. If the doctor finds something abnormal or worth checking out, the patient is referred for a mammogram, which requires X-rays given at a licensed radiology facility. Planned Parenthood does administer Pap tests and HPV tests, both of which screen for cervical cancer.

Richards said during the hearing that Planned Parenthood clinics do not have mammogram machines. The Federal Drug Administration’s list, updated weekly, of certified mammography facilities does not list any Planned Parenthood clinics. Some Planned Parenthood affiliates host free mammography mobile vans for low-income and uninsured women.

Despite the ongoing emphasis on Planned Parenthood’s mammogram referrals, this service does not reflect the core clients of the organization — certainly not clients in the reproductive age or have the highest rate of first-time abortions. Mammograms are recommended once a year for women 40 to 49, and every other year for women 50 to 74 years. Referrals are less commonly made for women under 40.

In 2013, about 7 percent of Planned Parenthood clients were women over 40 years old. This figure has remained steady over the past few years, according to the organization. So, when people talk about Planned Parenthood clients who need mammography referrals the most, they are referring to a small percentage of total patients.

Who is misleading who?

Mr richards was pretty clear in front of congress that planned parenthood does not provide mammograms.

Nothing like setting up a strawman and knocking it down I guess.

Why you are posting this nonsense here is beyond me.

We uphold the rating we gave to the president in 2012, and award Three Pinocchios to Planned Parenthood supporters’ continued use of misleading language to suggest that it directly administers mammograms. In fact, supporters should drop this talking point, given that less than 3 percent of Planned Parenthood breast exams result in a referral for a mammogram and other specialized services.

That article is pure propaganda for the pro life crowd to tout as planned parenthood being liars.

That article is no where near being on my side.

Planned Parrenthood primarily provides family planning services? Is that now a crime, or just about to become criminal?

they are claiming planned parenthood lies about giving mammograms based apparently on this statement.

In 2012, they issued a press release that read, “Planned Parenthood helps women nationwide get access to mammograms, as part of the range of health care Planned Parenthood health centers provide to nearly three million people a year.”

Because like the right wing morons they are they don't know the difference between helping get access and providing

MY hate for these fuckwits grows by the day. Dishonest fucks.

Sorry this one really pissed me off.

Sorry for losing my mind.

I watched the "hearing" and specifically remembered Mrs. Richards saying they provide breast exams and referrals for mammograms. So I googled it to see if I could find a video of her saying it to refute this nonsense and right away found a bunch of rightwing nutjob articles about planned parenthood lying about providing mammograms.

Argh getting mad again thinking about them.

vs. sexual and family planning health. It was almost as if they were saying "why don't you want to fight women's cancer". I am just putting the issue into perspective. Planned parenthood has only 7% of its clients over the age of 40. Why they don't do so much mammogram screening. I'm on your side.

of their clients are too young for mammograms only helps their case. They do referrals. They care about cancer but deal with the health needs of their client base most of all. Pap smears and the like are where they provide anti cancer screenings themselves for their mostly young clients.

like this: Congress does not provide sufficient funds for Planned Parenthood to purchase, maintain and staff its own mammogram machines and therefore must refer patients who need mammograms to radiology clinics that provide the service.

I know because they provided that for me, twice.

You can't just walk into a breast health center and get a mammogram.
