Lindsey Graham defends his vote against Hurricane Sandy package while mulling South Carolina flood relief

Tuesday night, when the day's Senate work is done, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) will jet down to South Carolina to survey the damage of Hurricane Joaquin. He'll do so after being labeled a hypocrite, having opposed a mammoth and somewhat controversial package to aid areas damaged by 2012's Hurricane Sandy. On Monday, he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that South Carolina would be fixed, and "whatever it costs, it costs," but blanked on his reason for opposing the Sandy aid -- or even whether he had.

"I'm all for helping the people in New Jersey," Graham said. "I don't really remember me voting that way... but I'd be glad to look and tell you why I did vote no, if I did."

Today, Graham told The Washington Post that he'd studied the winter 2012-2013 Sandy votes, and come up with a better answer for Blitzer.

"I really didn't quite understand his question," Graham told The Washington Post. "The Hurricane Sandy package was $60 billion. Forty-seven states got community development funding. They repaired Amtrak corridors unaffected by Sandy. It was a pork-fest. We had a $24 billion alternative that was focused on Sandy. What do we know now? We know that of the money appropriated, only 11 percent was appropriated in the first year. A lot of this money was unaccounted for and mismanaged. When I put together a package, if one is needed, it will be detailed for this event. It won't have anything to do with other needs in South Carolina, and I will fight like a tiger to make sure somebody doesn't use our tragedy for their advantage. You'll see how it should be done."

It is time to return the favor. I am also against the farm bill and an opponent of any help to Appalachia.
