7. Yah. Most anti-virus software will log the source of the intruder.

It's not always easy figuring out which ad it came from, though, since the ad would just be an intermediary for some other source. I hate that stuff with a passion. Sadly, Google is always behind in its malware spotting. They'll kill the ad, eventually, but they move slowly. Until then, they'll just go on feeding the ad to sites that are using Google ads. Very frustrating.

your browser may slow to a crawl, or even stop. There is ad-blocking software for most browsers. It's worth looking into.

What's really interesting is that a lot of sites that are serving malware are completely unaware that they are doing it.

Hotlinking images is another source for malware from sites. I've seen that happen on DU, too.

4. What, exactly, did the AVG notification say?

I believe AVG also keeps a log of that stuff. You should be able to look at it and see a source for the virus or malware. I don't use AVG, or I'd give you a step-by-step for viewing its log, but I'm sure there is one.

I run FF (Firefox) and have ad blocker running.

I suspect the malware is coming from the ads as other posters have suggested.

Which browser are you using? If you're using IE, don't. IE doesn't offer the Adblock add-on.
