Because the House speaker doesn't have to be a member of Congress, there are rumors that some Republicans are trying to draft former Speaker Newt Gingrich and former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney for the spot. House GOP members are meeting at 9 a.m. ET on Friday to discuss a path forward. A floor vote on who will take over as House speaker is set for Oct. 29. Speaker John Boehner was expected to leave on Oct. 30, but said he will stay in his role until the House elects a new speaker. -
