Muslims celebrate Obama's pork ban in federal prisons

Even though it has nothing to do with accommodating Muslim prisoners’ faith, those who follow the Islamic teachings praised the Obama administration for banning pork from 122 federal prisons.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons instituted the ban on nonhalal meats at the beginning of this fiscal year because pork is expensive, and a survey found that inmates don’t like the taste of the “other white meat.”

Per The Washington Post:


“Why keep pushing food that people don’t want to eat?” asked Edmond Ross, a spokesman for the prison bureau. “Pork has been the lowest-rated food by inmates for several years,” It also apparently got more expensive for the government to buy, although he did not provide specifics.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) welcomed the change because it accommodates Muslim inmates, but the groups spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said he hopes, “its not an indication of an increasing number of Muslims in the prison system.”

3. Yeah, I don't get the reasoning

Hard to believe they really don't want any more bacon, sausage, hotdogs, ribs, etc...

I thought pork was a lot cheaper than beef as well.

As of last week, the prison menu had added an “economically viable” turkey bacon substitute.

6. It's seasonal.

You see a lot more pork in the fall because farmers don't want the extra expense of feeding pigs through the winter. Porcine gestation periods are just under 4 months, so female pigs pregnant now will be giving birth in February or so to replace males slaughtered for sale now. ETA - and when more pork floods the market, obviously prices drop.

I don't like factory farming or keeping animals in tiny crates. I used to love bacon but never again. Not telling anyone what to do but I'm very glad anytime anyone turns down pig on a plate.
