Elementary students too rushed for lunch, Seattle study shows

Not The Onion!

http://hsnewsbeat.uw.edu/story/elementary-students-too-rushed-lunch-seattle-study-shows

A recent report from the Nutritional Sciences Program at the University of Washington School of Public Health confirmed what many Seattle parents know anecdotally: Their school-age children on average sat down for fewer than 13 minutes to eat lunch – far fewer than the 20 minutes called for in local and federal guidelines.

The UW graduate students found that travel time from the classroom to the cafeteria as well as time standing in line for a hot lunch cut into actual “seated time.”

The resulting research report – “Lunch Time at School: How Much is Enough?” – cited previous research linking proper nutrition and healthy eating with academic achievement, conduct, and overall school performance.

if they have 20 minutes, then they're too rushed to get their food and eat.

but what do experts know, you figured out in minutes what they took a lot of time examining and doing research.

camp he came home sick because he had to eat so fast.

It is happening here also. We do not have a noon hour anymore for anyone. 1/2 hour is supposed to be enough.

we were timed from when we actually sat down to eat, so we did have the full 20 minutes to eat each meal. This was in the 1980's. We got more time to eat than these students get.

I was a bit of a picky eater and I had to negotiate with the lunchroom supervisors on how much I had to eat before going out to the playground. Some days I liked the food however.
