(137 posts)The Gadsden Flag:
Positioned below the rattlesnake are the words "Don't tread on me". The flag is named after American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden (17241805), who designed it in 1775 during the American Revolution. It was also used by the Continental Marines as an early motto flag, along with the Moultrie Flag.

(14,733 posts)talking about secession, going around calling themselves 'sovereign citizens' and various nutjob things. More treasonous than patriotic.

(3,263 posts)Tea Party Movement symbol Edit
The flag at a Tea Party rally in September 2009.
Beginning in 2009 at Tea Party rallies, the Gadsden Flag has been adopted as a symbol of the American Tea Party movement.[9][10][11][12] It was also displayed by members of Congress at Tea Party movement rallies.[13] Some lawmakers have called it a "political symbol" because of this association.[11][14]
Tea partiers are as a group are pretty damn racists IMO
Although they do claim to be patriots

(2,188 posts)It's the Gadsden flag, an official flag that was designed it in 1775. Unfortunately, it is used by some racists. On the flip side, many some here use it as their avatar.

Hard to know if the nation will ever be able to reclaim it. It will take a long time, I suspect.
Not quite as bad as how the Nazis "ruined" the swastika, which had a lot of positive connotations before they got ahold of it--now it sends chills down one's spine.

(25,586 posts)I don't display it any way because sadly it's been co-opted by shitheads and I don't want to be associated with those people in any way, but it's been a part of the crowd at USA national team soccer games in the past and has a proud history that predates the teafucks.

Sounds like a win-win all around for me...The state gets extra revenues, and it's much easier for me to identify who my potential enemies are...

(1 post)The Gadsden Flag is used by our Navy. The snake and "don't tread on me" are used by various armed forces. The battle flag is racist but ignorant rednecks wear it all the time, thinking it represents their country life when it just makes them look racist.
