Why was Henry Jackson in the East and volunteering to serve in the Union Army? Because he was owed $1,300 in back pay for the Overland Mail work, he decided to travel East to collect his money. While Henry Jackson waited for the money to come through, he worked as a wagon master and was captured by the Confederate Army and held as prisoner for several months. After his release he decided to fight for the Union because of the way he was treated by Confederates.
Henry Jackson was commissioned as a lieutenant since he had previously served in the Mormon Battalion, with the First Regiment, District of Columbia, Volunteer Cavalry. He was shot in the Battle of White Bridge near Jarretts Station, Virginia on May 8, 1864 and died of infection at the age of 37 on May 27 ...
Before a plaque could be placed on the State Capitol grounds, it had to be approved by the State Preservation Board that took from November 2014 until August 2015. The soon-to-be Eagle Scout then had to start working on raising funds to pay for the plaque.
