Israel meets with Google and YouTube to discuss censoring Palestinian videos

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by TexasTowelie (a host of the General Discussion forum).

Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely has met with representatives of YouTube and Google to discuss ways to cooperate in what she calls the fight against “inciting violence and terrorism”.

Israel’s Maariv newspaper reported yesterday that Hotovely agreed to work with Google and YouTube in order to establish a joint working mechanism to monitor and prevent the publication of “inflammatory material” originating in the Palestinian terriroties.

Since the latest escalation of violence between Palestinians and Israeli security services that erupted at the beginning of October, many people have been sharing videos depicting Israeli aggression towards Palestinians to highlight the Palestinian perspective of the conflict. London-based Arab newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed has expressed concerns that the meetings suggest moves towards censoring Palestinian material on the part of the Israeli state.

The faceless/nameless writer did not say where this meeting took place and when, didnt give direct links so readers could verify for themselves. The way that its written initially gave me the impression that was just another baseless rumor put out by a Pro-Palestinian/Anti-Israel rag.

With that said, a meeting did take place and what the writer failed to disclose is that the meeting was about videos that incite people to violence, there was no mention of "censorship" or removing videos. The press release did mention that the DFM was briefed on systems that identify videos that incite violence.

DFM Hotovely meets with YouTube CEO and Google Director of Public Policy

"Deputy FM Hotovely: We are engaged daily in confronting incitement to violence, a task which can benefit greatly from the cooperation of those companies that are involved in social media."

As part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' campaign against online incitement, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely met with Youtube CEO Susan Wojcicki and with Jennifer Downes, Director of Public Policy at Google at the company's Silicon Valley offices.

Deputy Minister Hotovely was briefed on the companies' system for identifying video clips which incite to violence.

In the meetings, Hotovely raised the problem of incitement which goads small children to go out and stab innocents:

"The daily stabbings in Israel are a result of young boys and girls who are indoctrinated from an early age in the Palestinian education system and through social media. We are engaged daily in confronting incitement to violence, a task which can benefit greatly from the cooperation of those companies that are involved in social media."

Should any government whether it be Saudi Arabia, Israel, The UK, Russia, Turkey or the US be involved in making backroom deals to potentially censor videos, absolutely not but this is just the natural progression of things and lets be honest here, these governments already have operatives in key positions at various tech companies to take down content among other things.

At least Israel is being open and honest in this case but whats really scary is the fact that many youtube accounts that upload Police brutality videos end up being terminated at an alarming rate.

The Erik Garner video:

Video of a male NYPD cop grabbing a woman and slamming her face first into the ground

Video of a female Indian reservation cop tasering an unresponsive man

Racine WI SWAT shooting small dog in the back

Ervin Leon Edwards being beaten and tasered in jail all over wearing saggy pants in public

Francis Jared Pusok beating by multiple deputies

I know this because I've linked to these videos before like in this post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=5429436

and I'm shocked at how many videos have been purged from youtube and the accounts terminated.
