He was shirtless with a barber's razor in his hand. They could have shot his hand - his foot - whatever. He actually looked mentally challenged.
I'm sick of this shit. Oops - he was white.

(15,429 posts)This is the first rule of firing a weapon at another human.
You do not aim for the hand or foot or arm or leg.
You aim center mass.
If you are firing a weapon, your goal is to put down the human you are firing at.
I was taught this by the Army.

(269,187 posts)You don't shoot to kill citizens
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)It's a fact.
Any time a cop pulls their service weapon and fires, the goal is to put the target down. There is no "shoot to wound". They always aim at center mass.
The only time this rule is ever altered is if the target is wearing body armor.
TV shows and movies are full of shit. Cops never aim to wound.
ON EDIT: This is why it is critical that law enforcement be taught to not pull their service weapon so readily. Once it escalates to that point, most likely somebody is going to die.

(30,884 posts)Cops need more training on deescalation techniques.
the Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy, and Roy rogers were always able to shoot the gun out of the perp's hand. why can't the cops do that? (sarcasm)
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)police are trained to shoot until the threat is neutralized, and are trained to shoot center mass.
Only in Hollywood movies do cops shoot the weapons out of hands or shoot the foot/leg.

(1,683 posts)a wounded, but incapacitated enemy is better than a dead enemy. It takes four guys to carry him back to the collecting point, an aid man to treat him, two ambulance attendants to evacuate him, and numerous medical personnel along the line of evacuation to care for him. A dead guy just gets a couple of GR collectors "when and if".

Hoyt
(54,770 posts)out a better way to handle these situations.
Army dogma might be fine in a war zone, but this isn't a war zone as much as people want to make it so. Besides, military dogma in past wars, like WWII, is that you incapacitate your enemy. That doesn't go over well with most gunners for some reason.
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)Even civilians are trained the same way for self defense.
You always fire center mass.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)Like I added above, there are better ways, and shooting center mass is not something law of nature.
Gunners like it though, it makes killing simple.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)Cops are just like civilians, there's an adrenaline dump, making more difficult to accurately aim a firearm, that's why cops are taught to go for the largest part of the human body, center mass.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)I'm advocating that the simple rules gunners live by are BS.
In most cases you can take out a guy with a knife WITHOUT shooting them at all.
Rather than stocking up on guns and ammo and going to the range to practice shooting people, take some self-defense courses that don't require a darn gun. It's really that dang simple.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)really that dang simple.
LOL.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)Christ, you act like everone should view the world like Lt Calley.
You don't have to shoot people all the time, just like we don't have to invade helpless countries just because we can.
I bet if Darren Wilson or Zman thought they'd get a commendation, or approval from callous gunners, they would have been much less likely to shoot.

(9,951 posts)I'm stating a fact, something you should learn to do regarding firearm issues.

(4,149 posts)This is all so unnecessary. Did nobody else see the ballistic shields that the French police used when they went into the Bataclan and then later the apartment where the ringleader was hiding out. There was an interview with one of the police and he showed the shield with what appeared to be over a dozen rounds embedded in it. Why don't our police have these? They would mostly eliminate the "in fear of his safety " defense for a cop-involved shooting and make it totally unnecessary to fire at someone with a weapon or suspected weapon other than a firearm.

(16,286 posts)The police consider their lives superior to all others and therefore they can and will shoot you long before it is necessary to do so.
Seems to me.
Seems to me they arent putting the public's lives on anywhere near an equal level of their own.
When they react to a San Bernadino situation of course they are going to do what they did, but this guy not only had not killed anyone yet, he was one guy, with a weapon that wasnt a gun.

(18,585 posts)That Annie Oakley shit doesn't work in real life.
Cops aim for center mass because: 1. that's the single largest area of the body, therefore minimizing risk of a miss which could endanger bystanders especially during the adrenaline spike of a 'fight or flight' response, and 2. that's the area most likely to incapacitate a person.
If you're not justified in using potentially deadly force, then you're not justified in discharging your gun, period. Grab a taser or a bean-bag round shotgun instead.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)a knife, pants that COULD hide a gun , etc. I know that goes against everything you believe, as a gunner.

Of course, it should come as no surprise that you're against any kind of guns.. they were an occupational hazard to you, weren't they?

(54,770 posts)define another simple rule where you can pull you gun and blast away. Only, gunners can't identify they are prone to look for opportunities to shoot people.

One other thing, in the video, you can see where he raises his right hand with the straight edge blade in it, high enough that you can see the blade over the female cop's right shoulder. I don't know if he intended to throw it or what but that's when they shot him.

(1,683 posts)We should bring back nightsticks. They made believers out of the perps often without the need for a criminal sentence and felony conviction. "You really, really don't want us to do this again, do you? Just walk on the straight and narrow in the future, OK?"
