At a monthly dinner meeting this week, Republican Party brass decided it would be prudent to plan for a contested convention, which would be triggered if no candidate has enough delegates to win the nomination.
Five sources insisted that while the topic came up during the dinner, it did not dominate the discussion.
Republican strategists have long theorized about the possibility of the brokered convention, which hasn't happened in decades, but the dinner meeting appears to be the first active planning taken by the GOP to prepare for it.
The plans, first reported by The Washington Post, come as 14 Republicans plan to duke it out in the Iowa caucuses, a historically large field that has winnowed slowly. Republicans are worried that -- given that many delegates are awarded proportionally -- there is a possibility that a brokered convention could happen.
A brokered convention occurs when no candidate gets enough of the delegates to secure the nomination on the first vote tally. After that, delegates can be given up to other candidates, shifting the balance.

If they've done all this gerrymandering and redistricting and STILL can't get the delagetes?
I wish (and maybe this is official request) for a emoticon for toast.

(109,001 posts)convention is a possibility, because it will allow them to toss out Trump, even if he is the one with a plurality of votes.

So sad for them.

Seems clear he will be their candidate with no need for a brokered convention.

(135,425 posts)Their supers differ from ours in that NONE of them are elected to anything. Most of ours have been elected to public office at some point in time.
Although "superdelegate" was originally coined and created to describe this type of Democratic delegate, the term has become widely used to describe these delegates in both parties,[1] even though it is not an official term used by either party.
For Democrats, superdelegates fall into two categories:
delegates seated based on other positions they hold, who are formally described (in Rule 9.A) as "unpledged party leader and elected official delegates"[2] (unpledged PLEO delegates); and
additional unpledged delegates selected by each state party (in a fixed predetermined number), who are formally described (in Rule 9.B) as "unpledged add-on delegates" and who need not hold any party or elected position before their selection as delegates.[2]
For Republicans, there are generally 3 unpledged delegates in each state, consisting of the state chairman and two RNC committee members.
A common criticism is that unpledged delegates could potentially swing the results to nominate a candidate that did not receive the majority of votes during the primaries.

(40,416 posts)My connection is the cell towers which means using an iPhone. There is no cable TV or broadband INet where I live. Hell, there aren't even any paved roads here. (Actually, there are a couple paved roads, both two laners with no shoulders. One has to drive 15 miles for anything better. In winter, when it snows, I can't even get to the closest paved road, which wouldn't be cleared of snow anyway.)
It is really pretty here, though.

(7,303 posts)Mutts are great as most all dogs are IMO. I didn't get my first lab till I was almost 40 and fell madly in love with the breed. But yes, mutts are great too.
I get my dogs from shelters and no matter the breed they seem to understand that they just got a reprieve and don't want to blow it!
As for the GS, I want their superior guard abilities (compared to the usually docile and good natured Lab) for my old age as I travel the country alone.

Nipped (I guess that's why the call them pinschers) my mother's current husband right on the ass when he attempted to walk in my home before I went to the door and allowed him in. This was back in the 80's and that man still talks about that dog nipping his ass to this day whenever he come to my house.

(11,243 posts)They created a monster and now they cannot control it. They unleashed the Fox News noise machine to whip up populist anger, then gerrymandered democrat proof districts, thinking they would guarantee their hold on power. But now the monster is loose and it does not have to listen to the GOP masters. Turns out their districts are also GOP-party candidate proof. Unintended consequences....
Either toast or fork emoticon would be nice
