I can't tell you how much pain and suffering it takes away...it's a good feeling and you don't have to be religious (I am not) to do it.

Forgiveness is not something that is "deserved," so one forgives from charity. Forgiving from enlightened self-interest would seem to miss the point of the exercise.

Peace of mind is a wonderful gift to get as a byproduct as you deserve to make your life the happiest it can be.

The person(s) you hold one against doesn't know, doesn't care or enjoys watching you stew. In the mean time you're building up emotional bile which just hurts you. On the other, being happy bugs them no end.

Forgiving others is a gift to yourself,
given not because the other deserves pardon,
but because you deserve the serenity and joy
that comes from releasing resentment and anger,
and from embracing universal forgiveness.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Forgiving is not a gift to someone else.
Forgiving is your gift to yourself -
a great gift - the gift of happiness.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Forgive those who have injured you -
not because they deserve your forgiveness,
but because you can never be happy
until you release your anger and grant forgiveness.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Forgiveness is the cleansing fire
that burns away old regrets and resentments.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Forgiveness of all people and all acts -
is a sure path to happiness.
