Which didn't lead to something worse; what did we do differently in that case? Or were conditions just unique in Germany at that period, and unlikely to be repeated.

My impression has been the opposite - the Soviet Union wanted to deal much more harshly with Germany than we eventually did.

go far enough, although I recognize that most see that opinion as heterodox.
As for 1945, the USSR lost some 25 million, the U.S. a mere 250,000. That disparity would tend to breed some comparatively hard feelings, I'd think.
