Yet, even the president has admitted that the executive order is not going to prevent every mass shooting.
There is evidence that unregulated private sales over the internet and at gun shows are a source of guns for individuals who are ineligible to purchase or possess a firearm. However, the weapons used in recent mass shootings in San Bernardino and Umpqua Community College in Oregon were acquired legally at federally licensed gun stores or through private transactions that likely wouldnt be affected by Obamas new rules. In other words, the presidents executive order would not have stopped these shooters.
The presidents executive order and its focus on the gun-show loophole is largely political theater. Act II will be his upcoming town hall meeting on CNN.

(10,164 posts)It's intended to address the (exponentially more numerous) shootings by ordinary criminals. That is, in my view, vastly more important, for the simple reason that far, far more people die from the latter. It would be less political theater than something entirely devoted to mass shootings, I'd say.

Obama's announcement were executive actions, not executive orders, big difference.

Hence the reason they will have little to no effect.

(22,794 posts)The reaction from the right proves he is right on the money. Gun nuts keep insisting all the government has to do is "enforce the law." Obama just gave the government better tools to do that. It will be up to congress to improve the law itself.
