Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell appeared to dash any hope that Congress would formally authorize President Obama to wage war against ISIS.
His remarks came as McConnells House counterpart, Speaker Paul Ryan, is examining the feasibility of passing such an authorization this year. During an interview on ABCs This Week, McConnell said he couldnt imagine voting for any authorization to use military force that the president would actually sign because he believes the war authorization President Obama wants would, in McConnells words, tie the hands of the next president.
I think an AUMF, an authorization to use military force, that ties the president's hands behind his back is not something I would want to do to a new president who's going to have to clean up this mess, he said.
McConnell also discussed the presidents State of the Union address Tuesday, saying he hopes to hear Obama announce a new strategy for defeating ISIS.

(32,952 posts)To do anything and then we will blame you for not doing anything. Then blame POTUS for not doing anything, and the people who vote for them believe it because they're stupid and don't pay attention. Faux tells them what to think.

(58,785 posts)Not in an election year, or any time Democrats would get credit with swing and conservative voters. Just this ISIS authorization thing alone has been going on for well over a year already.
We've watched this same dance a bunch of times over the past 7 years of a Democratic administration. The GOP cynically refuses to authorize military action, then blames Obama for endangering America by not acting, then claims Obama has acted illegally, then swamps the nation with lies about how the GOP is busy keeping it safe from all those scary foreign devils.
