David Bowie has died after a battle with cancer, his representative confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the familys privacy during their time of grief," read a statement posted on the artist's official social media accounts.
The influential singer-songwriter and producer dabbled in glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic 40-plus-year career.
Bowies artistic breakthrough came with 1972s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, an album that fostered the notion of rock star as space alien. Fusing British mod with Japanese kabuki styles and rock with theater, Bowie created the flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust.
Three years later, Bowie achieved his first major American crossover success with the No. 1 single Fame off the Top 10 album Young Americans, then followed with the 1976 avant-garde art-rock LP Station to Station, which made it to No. 3 on the charts and featured Top 10 hit Golden Years.
Other memorable songs included 1983s Lets Dance his only other No. 1 U.S. hit Space Oddity, Heroes, Changes, Under Pressure, China Girl, Modern Love, Rebel, Rebel, All the Young Dudes, Panic in Detroit, Fashion, Life on Mars Suffragette City and a 1977 Christmas medley with Bing Crosby.

(3,937 posts)His early 80s "Let's Dance" fans didn't like the new direction and tickets were easy to come by. You could walk right up to the stage. It was the Hollywood Palladium and it seemed nearly empty.
A restlessly inventive spirit that craved art, fashion and music as few others have.

(2,672 posts)His birthday was last Friday and I was listening to one of his new songs, "Lazarus" from his new album Blackstar. I loved his singing voice. "Heroes" being one of my favorite songs that he wrote.
True story, David Bowie, Carlos Alomar, and John Lennon wrote the song "Fame" and Bowie was excited because he claimed it would be his first number one hit in the US. Lennon doubted that it would be a number one hit, so Bowie bet Lennon that if it hit number one, Lennon had to perform the song with him (Bowie) in concert. The song did indeed hit number one and Lennon performed with Bowie for one concert at Madison Square Garden.
RIP, Mr. Bowie. You'll be greatly missed.

(2,805 posts)I know just about every one of his songs up until 10 years ago. And have fond memories associated with all of them. I might be watching youtube videos all day today as people post various favorites. It just makes me sad to hear of his death.

(141 posts)My parents were both huge Bowie fans, so I grew up listening to his work. After 27 years of hearing his work, it still has yet to get old.
For me, that kind of staying power can't be said of any other of my favorite musical artists. It's part of the reason why I love his work so much.

(2,805 posts)Those were the old vinyl record days when you didn't have videos and had to be able to sing to get a record contract. I miss those days.
Bowie was fearless. He challenged his listeners and most often succeeded. And yes, I did have a crush on him. He put it out there and said, "Love me or hate me" this is what I am singing today. R.I.P. again.

(50,986 posts)the presence that Bowie was.
We all follow politics. We know that Chris Christie tried to be Bruce Springsteen fan no. 1. We know that Ted Nugent is Mike Huckabee's favorite rocker. Not many Republican presidential candidates, I bet, were Bowie listeners. Call it a hunch.

(50,986 posts)discuss Bowie's importance with Lindsay Graham. He alone among the nutbag GOP candidates seemed able to complete a few thoughtful sentences. The rest of the pack probably can't feed and dress themselves.

(16,245 posts)Maybe I was a little too young when he was in his heyday.
I've only recently developed an appreciation for the music. There is a movie called "Hunky Dory" starring Minnie Driver, about a teacher who puts on a musical version of "The Tempest", with at least two Bowie songs (and I never realized the movie is named after one of Bowie's albums). Maybe even more but I didn't recognize them. And of course I like Nirvana's cover of "The Man who Sold the World" from Unplugged.
But his music was everywhere. And no doubt he was a big influence on bands that I love, like REM.
