(51,129 posts)This is from Linda Neal, www.earthandspirit.org
I've been asked to talk at today's noon Rally at Holliday Park in NE Portland. Here's what I'm going to say:
I am the great-grandaughter of Harney County homesteaders and the stepdaughter of David Marshall, who was the wildlife biologist at Malheur Refuge under John Scharff. The pond in front of the refuge is named after my stepfather. My grandmother was a violinist in the Sagebrush Orchestra that began in Burns in 1912 and eventually became the Portland Youth Philharmonic. We still own the original homestead cabin and 1200 acres of land near Princeton, about 20 miles from refuge headquarters. We pay our taxes there. My familys company makes optical equipment for hunters and birders. I hunt. We lease our land for cattle grazing. I have a life bird list. My husband is a Native American elder and former saddle bronc rider, and we love Harney County.
We love the people of Harney County the Paiutes, the Basque people, the ranchers, the government employees, the musicians, birders, contractors, doctors, the tai chi and yoga instructors, writers, farmers, shopkeepers, and the artists. There is so much talent and creativity among the people, and because there only 7000 people in the whole county, and theyre spread out so far, they really help each other out. Here in Portland we like to think we emphasize community, but out there the whole county of over 10,000 square miles is one big community. I want you to know that the people of Harney County are good people, just as you are. They love the land and believe in taking care of it. They simply like living in a place where you can see forever, and there are no traffic jams.
The thing that makes me the saddest about this whole occupation is how it is dividing the community there, turning friends against each other, and how the press emphasizes the problems rather than the constructive efforts that have arisen from community members to solve those problems. The High Desert Partnership http://highdesertpartnership.org/ is one such constructive process that brings together all stakeholders -- Refuge and BLM employees, ranchers, and environmental groups to do things like come up with a 15 year refuge plan that everyone supports. The plan was put in place by involving everyone, and listening to everyone. As my husband says, we must learn to listen, and listen to learn. Audubon Society was one of the participants in that process. This plan is a model for refuge plans throughout the United States. These are the positive efforts that come out of Harney County, and they need your support as well. They will be in place long after Bundy and his gang has left, which, in my opinion, should have happened long ago. Then good people West of the mountains can continue to come together with good people east of the mountains, ranchers can continue to work with environmentalists and government employees, the Paiutes can return to their sacred sites, the snow geese can safely return to the refuge, and we can all remember that we are part of a much greater community.
Thank you for listening.

(51,129 posts)Award-winning author Ursula K. Le Guin has lived in Oregon for more than half a century, and has regularly visited the region surrounding the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge for 45 years. Ever since armed militants took over the refuge in a dispute over ranching fees on public lands, Le Guin has been following the situation very closely, she said in an email to ThinkProgress.
So when she saw an article titled Effort to free federal lands in the Sunday Oregonian, (she) did what any self-respecting, world-renowned author would do.

She wrote an epic Letter to the Editor that was a spirited defense of American public lands:
The Oregonians A1 headline on Sunday, Jan. 17, Effort to free federal lands, is inaccurate and irresponsible. The article that follows it is a mere mouthpiece for the scofflaws illegally occupying public buildings and land, repeating their lies and distortions of history and law.
Ammon Bundy and his bullyboys arent trying to free federal lands, but to hold them hostage. I cant go to the Malheur refuge now, though as a citizen of the United States, I own it and have the freedom of it. Thats what public land is: land that belongs to the public me, you, every law-abiding American. The people it doesnt belong to and who dont belong there are those who grabbed it by force of arms, flaunting their contempt for the local citizens.
Those citizens of Harney County have carefully hammered out agreements to manage the refuge in the best interest of landowners, scientists, visitors, tourists, livestock and wildlife. Theyre suffering more every day, economically and otherwise, from this invasion by outsiders.
Instead of parroting the meaningless rants of a flock of Right-Winged Loonybirds infesting the refuge, why doesnt The Oregonian talk to the people who live there?
Ursula K. Le Guin
Northwest Portland
Le Guin told ThinkProgress that the letter was printed unchanged, and she got a pleasant note informing me it was to be published, but nothing more from the paper or the author. A request for comment to the Oregonians public editor went unanswered as of publication.
