I can never get a straight answer, just almost entirely accusations, like all the accusations against Bill Clinton.

(46,371 posts)We gleefully laugh our asses off at republicans who get caught in sex scandals.
I have NO idea if J. Edgar was a closet gay, if he was, it makes his persecution of MLK even worse.

(16,399 posts)The hypocrisy of Republicans is that they engage in their own sexual peccadilloes while telling EVERYONE ELSE how to live their lives. Democrats aren't in the business of making sex a campaign issue. I have no clue what MLK, JFK, Bill Clinton or any other Dems sex life has to do with that........

If J. Edgar WAS gay, it makes him all the worse.
What I would like to know is just how factual was J. Edgar's "evidence."
Based on other shit the FBI pulled in the 60's, and under Nixon, I have serious doubts about these "sex tapes" J. Edgar thought he had.

(135,425 posts)They're the ones who say it's WRONG. They're the ones who want to deny family planning services, birth control, and reproductive health support to citizens.
Geez, why are you even bringing this up on after a celebratory weekend honoring the life of one of our greatest Americans? Who cares who he screwed?
Good grief. What's hypocritical is giving a shit about someone's private sex life when that person never once tried to lecture others about their sex lives.

(6,409 posts)J. Edgar Hoover had a collection of evidence, obtained by illegal means, he hoped would allow him to coerce King. He was somewhat disappointed because he initially hoped to establish that King was in league with communists, and all he got was extramarital affairs.

(5,739 posts)The only time that sort of thing is relevant is if it exposes some kind of hypocrisy. If MLK ever spoke out against adultery, then it certainly wasn't the core of his political message.

(25,406 posts)have had serious failings in their personal lives. And this applies across the whole political spectrum. Of course I believe in freedom of the press but I still look back with some envy on the fact that the press in the 1960s did not fixate on (for example) JFK's extra-marital dalliances like today's media would.

Lincoln suspended some Constitutional rights "for the war."
Martin Luther, (the church reformer,) was a vicious anti-Semite.
So was Henry Ford.
And so on.
