They are taken at National Airport, by the moderating effect of the Potomac. We had 30 inches here in the 'burbs when they had 17 there in '96. Other parts of DC have much higher snow totals than the airport.
Where I live 20 to 30 inches are expected. This will shut this area down for a week.

in the DC area. I was just off Columbia Pike about 4-5 miles west of National Airport (now Reagan), and we had about 10 inches. The reported totals at the airport were laughable - tiny amounts in comparison.
