A good question. Maybe we should ask a random Republican.

http://www.salon.com/2016/01/26/the_gop_and_the_dumbing_down_of_the_u_s_conservatives_need_to_accept_that_trump_palin_and_anti_intellectualism_is_their_fault/

There are dim voters on both sides of the political aisle, of course, and Americans are perhaps dumber than they used to be (about politics at least), but Trump’s half-baked slogan is winning over far more Republicans than Democrats. He’s their problem, and he only exists because a sufficient number of conservatives want him to. Trump — or some leftist equivalent — isn’t possible in the Democratic Party.

...

Why, in other words, do Trump and — gaseous celebrity candidates like Sarah Palin — seem only to gain traction in the Republican Party?

-------

Maybe we should ask a Republican.

Why does the Democratic Party not have a candidate similar to Donald Trump?

Why is none of the democratic candidates promising to make Mexico pay for US-government projects?

Why is none of the democratic candidates promising to send out enforcers and put people in prison-camps?

Why is none of them proposing to crack down on religious people?

Why do all of the democratic candidates have political experience?

Why does none of them have a troupe of children praising their glories?

What's wrong with them?

How can we make America "great" again when it is the greatest country in the world already?

They are not very good at recognizing their own paradoxes.

Because we're weak on terrorism, we hate America, we're afraid of guns, we hate God, we're perverts, we're marijuana addicts, and we spend out lives and careers sucking the life blood out of our nation as politicians or public employees.

You must have gone to one of those secret Girl scout meetings where they teach you all of this stuff.

I had just taken a bite of my eggs benny when I read this. Thankfully, I love them so much I wouldn't dream of spitting them onto my monitor, by laughing so hard.

No Saul (Paul) or Greek philosophy or 200 year old inbred theological absurdities.

rely on hyperbole and sound-bytes

and we should never stoop that low.

What most GOPers don't understand is that the Democratic party--right now--looks way more like Ronald Reagan than does the GOP.

Too much of the Democratic ideas began as ideas from the GOP--cap & trade, health care, immigration--but as soon as the left moved to the middle, these ideas became "SOCIALIST."

Most people don't know this.

I would love to see Democrats in office. I would love to see them move even more "left" than this. But I still can't understand that they don't see this "right" as lunacy. If they love Reagan's politics, they'd vote Democratic.

I would love to be a researcher on the thoughts of voters right about now.

None of it makes sense.

that many are hooked onto the hate radio. They are programmed to hate Democrats more than loving this country. One thing I have noticed with Faux viewers is that many are intellectually lazy. Faux tells them what the news is and what to think about it. No need to wonder if they are hearing the truth when they get all the info they need, including how to think. They move on to other things they need/want to do.

Seriously. The questions on your OP are valid and thought provoking, but alas; It doesn't matter.

The vast majority of republicans I deal with in life don't think anywhere near that deep. It's just gut-feel that drives them. Only the vicissitudes of demographic shift via aging will fix it. You'll never convince "true believers". Never.
