Remaining members of Oregon militia standoff debating whether to surrender

Carol J Williams and Lauren Dake in Burns, Oregon, and Sam Levin in San Francisco

The remaining members of the armed militia occupying a wildlife refuge in rural Oregon were deciding whether to surrender or stand their ground on Wednesday after officials killed one of their spokesmen and arrested the main leaders of the protest on a remote highway.

Hours after news broke on Tuesday night that law enforcement officials had fatally shot militiaman LaVoy Finicum, an Arizona rancher, and arrested leader Ammon Bundy and seven others, police began setting up blockades around the Malheur national wildlife refuge.

By early Wednesday morning, heavily armed law enforcement officials were blocking access to the refuge, preventing reporters and some Harney County residents from passing through.

Within the wildlife sanctuary, protesters were debating what to do next, according to militia members and supporters in direct communication with the holdouts.

“They arrested all of the leadership,” occupier Corey Lequieu said on Wednesday. “It’s all up in the air.” Lequieu, a Nevada resident who has been at the occupation for weeks, said the protesters who are still at the refuge became increasingly angry and sad as news spread Tuesday that Finicum was killed and that the main militia leaders were behind bars.

26 days ago. They need to leave. I hope the ones remaining don't believe they're going to be successful in "ordering" any LEO as to what terms/conditions will be going forward.
I am saddened by the one fatality and I agree with Sheriff Ward today-this was a/their choice....and it didn't Have to end that way.
LEO has been very patient (many, me included believe too patient, considering) but, I also recognize LEO has more facts and information about the situation as a whole.
I am relieved they are taking action in order to allow Oregon, Harney Co, the City of Burns et al to begin to move forward and try to return to "normalcy".

The "militia asswads" put Everyone in a very difficult and dangerous situation.

Like Mr. Stetson found out a couple of days ago (he's the guy who was driving drunk down to the refuge to join his comrades, who got stopped by the police long before he got there), the time to negotiate with law enforcement is before they put the cuffs on you, or before someone gets shot.

No hoards of support showed up. The internet is laughing. No great civil war because of them. They've been outsmarted by Obama.

That would be a good start. After all these loons started everything thinking they could avoid paying the government for the use of public property. A good garnishment of all assets until all costs for this little shindig are covered and then some extra for a "no advance booking" penalty would be a valuable lesson.

With the Oregon standoff's leaders either dead or in custody, a Georgia man has emerged overnight as the new leader of the occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge.

If federal law enforcement had hoped taking out the standoff's leaders while they were away from the refuge would decapitate the movement, the emergence of Jason Patrick as the new leader may not be welcome news. According to the Anti-Defamation League's Mark Pitcavage, Patrick–a sympathizer with the Three Percenter movement– has a history of right-wing extremism.

The Three Percenter movement was born in 2008 and references a questionable stat that just three percent of Americans were active in the Revolutionary War. They aspire to be the modern-day equivalent.

Like many of the men who have been holed up at the Oregon refuge for more than three weeks, Patrick was involved in the 2014 Cliven Bundy ranch standoff against the Bureau of Land Management in Nevada. Pitcavage also says that Patrick gained some attention in Georgia for attempts to smuggle video recorders into courtrooms.

they will have to contend with people coming in from other areas. They didn't get all of them and the worst thing is to have "survivors at the Alamo". They will start a new encampment in Burns.

$35.

It would probably be a thousand now.

I wonder how much they will be fined.
