Quit Complaining About Mayor Bloomberg’s Soda Ban, Fatsos

The second New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg's plan to ban large sodas was announced, you knew that people would use it to declare that America has become a Commu-fascist labor prison. The Atlantic called it classist. Comedy Central's political blog (they have one!) called it ridiculous. Forbes called Bloomberg a Republican Socialist. And Bernie Goldberg basically declared that the ban was a gateway law that will one day lead to the government stealing your kids in the middle of the night and harvest their organs to give to illegal immigrants.

To which I'd just like to counter: People, please, shut the fuck up.

If you think that a ban on large sodas is somehow an affront to America freedom, I have news for you: You don't live in a free country. You never have and you never will. That's an illusion. You are not free to murder people in America. You are not free to stand in the middle of an intersection and block traffic like an asshole. You do not have the absolute freedom to do anything you want in America, and that's a good thing, because living somewhere with absolute freedom means you live in fucking Deadwood. There are a million different laws and rules that come with being an American, and we, as a collective, put all those annoying rules in there of our own accord. Democracy doesn't mean "Hey you, go do whatever the fuck you want." It means that you get to choose the people that represent you in government, and hope that they create and enforce the laws that help us function as a civilized society.

And that's exactly what happened here. New York city residents were already fully aware that Bloomberg was prone to implementing drastic public health measures, like the 2003 ban on smoking in bars. And yet, they re-elected him. In other words, New Yorkers were FREE to vote for the man who installed laws that they apparently considered both sane and reasonable. That's how democracy works. Democracy is not OH MY GOD THESE LAWS WILL MAKE US PUSSIES! Democracy is people working together to sort out just what the rules of society should be. Obviously, this process is labored and often hilariously corrupt, but that's what living in a "free country" is supposed to mean. It doesn't mean that you get to grab a gun and storm City Hall just because you think a soda ban is some kind of sign of the End Times. It's fucking soda. Don't be such a pussy that you can't live without a 42 oz. cup of the shit. If you're the type to flip out just because you can't have that, then who's the real pussy?

You can use most artificial sweeteners if you have diabetes, including:
Saccharin (Sweet'N Low)
Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal)
Acesulfame potassium (Sunett)
Sucralose (Splenda)

Artificial sweeteners, also called sugar substitutes, offer the sweetness of sugar without the calories. Artificial sweeteners are many times sweeter than sugar, so it takes a smaller amount to sweeten foods. This is why foods made with artificial sweeteners may have fewer calories than those made with sugar.

Artificial sweeteners don't affect your blood sugar level. In fact, most artificial sweeteners are considered "free foods" because they don't count as a carbohydrate, a fat or any other diabetes exchange. Remember, however, other ingredients in foods containing artificial sweeteners can still affect your blood sugar level.

Also, be cautious with sugar alcohols — including mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol. Sugar alcohols can increase your blood sugar level. And for some people, sugar alcohols cause diarrhea.

http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/32/12/2184.abstract - Ingestion of Diet Soda Before a Glucose Load Augments Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Secretion

...and so forth. As said, there is argument and evidence on both sides. I think, as in many things, the precise cause and effect is the tricky thing, as behavior and environment tends to be complex and inter-related.

In my own case, there is some family tendency toward hypoglycemia and I have an older brother who is seldom without a Big Gulp, who is overweight and in poor health. I try to keep fit and healthy, and I have found that the more fit I am and the more exercise I get (as a cyclist, primarily, though my employment involves physical labor as well) the more I enjoy simpler unprocessed fruit and vegetable drinks and basic foods. I don't like the taste of soda, so I don't drink it. I think of it as the difference between eating for entertainment or habit, or eating out of bodily need.

Sun Jun 3, 2012, 07:01 PM

Study 2 has nothing to do with artificial sweeteners. It's about fructose's role on insulin response.

Study 3 was conducted with an accompanying 75g dose of glucose (so definitely not the same thing as drinking a diet soda) and indicate the complete opposite of your claim. The artificial sweeteners did not result in a statistically significant difference in insulin response.

I don't have enough domain knowledge of artificial sweeteners or studies involving isolated rat cells to fully assess Study 1, but it seems to indicate that some artificial sweeteners have an effect on insulin and others do not. Like Study 3, this one was done in the presence of glucose (though I'm not sure what the indicated concentration corresponds to as a food intake in humans). I'll also note that this study predates Study 3 by many years.

In light of Study 2, you might want to alter your consumption of fruit drinks (which are basically fructose and water) if you're trying to manage your insulin levels.

Not very nice.

I think the ban is totally stupid--there is a difference between the 2003 ban on smoking in bars, where non-smokers might like to breathe too, and restrictions on the amount of soda a person is allowed to buy in a cup. The author seems to be saying that "'living in a free country' is supposed to mean" that our elected representatives can micromanage our lives if we are the ones who elected them. Of course, in the previous paragraph, he also says that we don't live in a free country and never have and never will, so I guess the entire article constitutes a pretty weak argument.

But I think it's pretty silly that Mayor Moneybags is now saying that it's for the good of humanity that adults not be able to purchase sodas over 16 oz. It makes absolutely no sense at all unless it is another way for money to be made. Unless you request "no ice" I doubt you ever get more than 16 ounces of soda even on the super duper size anyway. It's obviously not about the children because if parents are letting their 6 year olds buy the super size drinks I am guessing this is more of a problem with the parent and not that huge amounts of soda are available.

Most of the folks who are complaining don't come from or understand NY, nor do they comprehend that this law is just one piece of a larger plan that also provides money for free fitness sessions and support for financially-strapped people who want to buy nutritious local food at farmers' markets.

They haven't seen the impact of diabetes on the NY population, and the drain on the city's resources, not to mention the suffering that comes with the disease.

Expect these reflux threads for some time to come as the soda industry fights back. And, yes, I'm a person who enjoys a Pepsi and a slice. I'm no teetotaler.

I'm so proud of NYC. We are the place that suffered the worst attack on American soil, worked hard to build our economy and promote diversity, and now attracts young people from all over the world who come here on creative pilgrimages.

We're a city that is building bike lanes, installing bicycle rentals all over the place and turning a large part of our concrete space green again. Our energy company is working on serious plans to build our alternative energy sources. We would have been able to clear much of our smog, keep subway fares down and enhance our public transportation if the goobers who populate our state houses hadn't voted our transportation plan down. In the meantime, their local corruption strangles their regions, but I am digressing...

In summers, our parks, large and small, are awash with music, film and dance, much of it either free or available for a donation under $5.

I could go on and on. The bottom line is that NY is both a pragmatic and an innovative city. The folks who perpetually complain about one law think that the elephant's tail is the elephant.

So, no, you're not alone. You are just the lucky one who got a rant in reply because I agree with you.

because I am astonished when I order a medium drink (because they have no small) and it is (to me) huge.

I am against this ban, and it is because I do not think that the government should be telling people how to live their personal lives. I would never order a large soft drink, but if someone wants to order one, this is not my business. If people are gaining too much weight, this is only one of the problems that they have. And it also is not my business.

Sat Jun 2, 2012, 07:58 PM
Jun 2012

“Political tags — such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth — are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort.”

Sun Jun 3, 2012, 12:34 AM
Jun 2012

is so that they can get 16oz of soda. Remove the ice and you're lucky if you get 16oz for that matter. Bloomberg now wants you to get 8oz in that 16oz cup and pay the same price you did for the huge one. So my advice to NYC dwellers is to travel with a 22-32oz ounce cup and then order a 16oz drink with no ice and a cup of ice. Then put both in your cup and you're good to go!

47. It is insensitive and cruel to call overweight people names. Are you perfect? 2nd..it's not "fat"
Sun Jun 3, 2012, 01:01 AM
Jun 2012

people who drink large sugar sodas, only. It's usually men, some of whom are just big and tall men, some of whom are normal sized but very thirsty or want to have some soda to last for a car trip or whatever. Some are overweight, no doubt.

I am not fat and don't drink sugar sodas, so his ban wouldn't affect me. But I think it's a ban that crosses a line. Makes me want to adopt the "nanny government" term. It's different from ciggies, since ciggies are addictive, and even one pack damages lungs. But one large sugar soda occasionally doesn't do any damage to the body, if the person lives an otherwise healthy lifestyle.

What's next? Fining people who don't work out three times a week for at least 30 minutes each time? It's most certainly more unhealthy not to do that than to drink a large sugar soda.

It's ridiculous. New York doesn't even have the obesity problem that many other cities do.

Don't complain, Citizen. You get to speak ONCE every 2/4/6 years, and you have to accept both the results of the election AND every single piece of legislation proposed and passed WITHOUT COMMENT OR COMPLAINT. If you don't like it, you have the chance to make your opinion known at the NEXT election, and ONLY at the next election.

And of course, Bloomberg a) had the rules changed in his second term so he could run for a 3rd term, and b) he spent an incredible amount of money per vote (far more than his opponents) to get that 3rd term.

Also, the same people who bemoan the excesses wrought by junk food marketing, or the stranglehold that big money has over all of our institutions, are now complaining about a move that curbs that influence. The same people who probably understood the message of "Super Size Me" are griping about a law that doesn't affect a person's freedom. You are still free to drink as much soda as you want.
