If he had to choose between them, I think I would choose Trump, which may surprise some of you, he said.
The reason is, Trump has proven already hes completely malleable, Carter said. I dont think he has any fixed (positions) hed go the White House and fight for. On the other hand, Ted Cruz is not malleable. He has far right-wing policies hed pursue if he became president.
Carter added that he had a feeling that Trump's chances for the presidency would fade away.
When people actually get ready to put on a ballot, This is the person I want to lead me for the next four or eight years, I think theyll have a little different opinion, Carter said.
Ultimately, he said he will support whoever is the Democratic nominee, noting he thinks Hillary Clinton will still prevail despite rival Bernie Sanderss remarkable showing, particularly among young people.

(4,119 posts)He says what he thinks his "voters" want to hear.
AND I don't think he understands how moronic and set in their ways republicans are. He only has to slip up once on one of their big issues (climate change a hoax, anti-abortion, homophobia, all muslims are evil terrorists, etc.) and they'll turn on him. Even the slightest mention of better gun laws and he's out.

TRUMP: I think you have to have it, and, again, I said Im conservative, generally speaking, Im conservative, and even very conservative. But Im quite liberal and getting much more liberal on health care and other things. I really say: Whats the purpose of a country if youre not going to have defensive and health care? If you cant take care of your sick in the country, forget it, its all over. I mean, its no good. So Im very liberal when it comes to health care. I believe in universal health care. I believe in whatever it takes to make people well and better.

Just this week, in fact.
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. Donald Trump is remaining firm on a sticking point for many Republican voters government-funded health care for all.
We do need health care for all people, Trump said at a rally here this week. What are we gonna do, let people die in the street?
This isnt the first time Trump has taken a health care stance heretical to many in the the GOP. Late last month, he said he wanted to let Medicare negotiate prescription drug prices with pharmaceutical companies. Thats an idea Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have been pushing. Rank-and-file voters seem to like it, but its been anathema to the GOP establishment, which prefers to talk about speeding up drug approvals and spurring competition to bring down prices.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS
Advocating for trump is not for this site.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Feb 5, 2016, 09:15 PM, and the Jury voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This comment is borderline, but during Primary season, it's just hypotheticals. Once the GE campaign starts, this sort of comment would warrant a hide.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Trump? You would vote for Trump???
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: While this was a borderline TOS violation, poster did not in fact openly advocate that Democrats vote for a Republican in order to spite Hillary. He or she merely shared their personal inclination to do so.
Snow Leopard: please keep these thoughts to yourself in the future. Thanks.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Poster is advocating others do it. Not against TOS.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I wouldn't call this ADVOCATING. Good grief, at least try to engage the poster in a discussion before alerting. This poster is not alone in this thread.
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It's not general election season yet and, "it would be entertaining at least" isn't what I'd call advocating for Trump. This sounds more like idle chatter than advocacy.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(3,051 posts)Trump is very much a populist, with a mix of stupid ideas and progressive ideas (e.g., he is for a single payer healthcare, which is more progressive than Hillary and in line with Bernie).

but Bernie has a good chance to take the whole thing

(5,902 posts)I wouldn't be surprised if Jimmy Carter endorses Bernie sometime before then.
Trump, for his part, responded to Carter by saying that "he's got good taste."
The Donald during the Carter years, back when he still had good taste.

(57 posts)Everything he does is for self-promotion. He's a multi-billion dollar circus act and the 2nd biggest fool in American political history (nobody beats Sarah for that top spot).
Again, he's not our problem. Our problem is that 30% of the Republican Party is stupid enough to support him.

(17,500 posts)And I am not completely confident that Mr Cruz would not take advantage of the office of POTUS to immanentize the Eschaton. I personally think he is running a con, and has no real convictions, but other and wiser heads say otherwise. If he is a True Believer, then I want him nowhere near the nuclear codes.

(1,524 posts)Trump is a clown. Cruz is an incredibly scary ideologue who believes God has sent him to take the wealth that has been stored by the "unrighteous" and give it to the "righteous" (which in his worldview is right-wingers). He openly doesn't believe in the separation of church and state and if you really want a good scare watch some of the revival meeting type videos with him and his father.

(2,983 posts)don't read very much about the policies, or about what's actually going on. Most of them either don't care, or don't have the time to educate themselves. Don't just shoot them down - if it's at all possible, we need to educate. Tell people WHY they should vote for the democratic nominee over Trump, should it come to that.
The current divide here and all the crap flinging - which I have recently engaged in myself, is one thing... but I'm going to support the democratic nominee, regardless of who it is and who my personal preference is. We cannot afford a President Trump, a President Cruz, or a President Rubio. I agree with Carter that Cruz would be far, far worse than Trump. Trump is still extremely bad, so I'm not even sure there's a word for how bad Cruz would be. "Scary" doesn't come close.
