Officer Fired for Threatening Tweets Back on Force
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SAN JOSE, Calif. Feb 21, 2016, 2:31 PM ET
The San Jose Mercury News (http://bayareane.ws/1Re6pS7) reports Phillip White re-joined the San Jose Police Department on Feb. 10 after convincing an independent arbitrator that termination was too harsh a punishment for his actions.
White posted several comments to his Twitter account in December 2014 saying he would kill any anti-police protesters who threatened his family. He appeared to challenge demonstrators to confront him.
The department initially suspended him, and community activists demanded his dismissal. He was fired in October.
SJPD Acting Chief Eddie Garcia says White won't be on patrol and has been assigned to administer the department's body-worn camera program.

(15,952 posts)1. I'd be concerned with his new position
SJPD Acting Chief Eddie Garcia says White won't be on patrol and has been assigned to administer the department's body-worn camera program.
Somehow his being in charge of bodycams is not a position he should be in control of administering. Plus I don't think he should have been rehired.

(11,364 posts)3. It's not enough to just fire people for committing crimes.
If he had been arrested and charged for making (credible) death threats, this would not have happened.

(305 posts)4. "independent arbitrator" This is the problem
These private arbitrators are not accountable to any one and no court can over rule them. Public employees should not have contracts that allow private corporations the right to make public policy.

They could always try to change the union contract next time it comes up for renewal.
