Former Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke Pleads Guilty to Obstruction, Civil Rights Charges
The former Long Island police chief accused of beating a suspect and then coercing officers to lie has pleaded guilty to civil rights and obstruction of justice charges.
Former Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke, 51, admitted to committing the crimes in federal court Friday morning under a planned deal. He's expected to face up to four years in prison under the arrangement.
Burke was arrested by the FBI earlier this year after he restrained and beat a thief who broke into his SUV and stole a bag that contained sex toys, pornography and cigars in 2012.
