I think it's a delicate tradeoff.
On the one hand, damage him too much too soon and you risk having to run against the far more dangerous Rubio instead.
On the other hand, it would be foolish to assume that Trump can't win - that was just what everyone said about the primary - and leave it too late before starting to attack him.
Ideally, I'd like to see him clinch the Republican nomination as soon as possible. Once he's taken care of Rubio the Democrats can safely start giving him both barrels.

(54,068 posts)3 reasons...
one, you don't need to wait for their nomination to attack. It builds our side, it whittles down theirs.
two, Trump is dangerous. If there's even a snowball's chance of him losing the nomination, it's better for America
three, Trump is a stronger candidate in November than Cruz or Rubio. Clinton will do better and might even have coat tails if we win big. Trump can beat Clinton. I doubt either of the two dumbest senators in history can stand up to her.

And I'm not that afraid of Rubio. No R has yet to gather in half of the Repub vote. That's about 20% of the general electorate or less.

(1,730 posts)direction to Democrats as far as taking him down. We need Ohio and Michigan to win the White House, so how blue collar Dems in Mass vote tomorrow, will be telling. I have heard many blue collar Democrat co-workers express support for Trump - and that's in Seattle. They would support Bernie, but not Hillary.
I've advised them that before they vote for Trump, they should ask him what his policy would be on long term unemployment benefits. Most Republicans view unemployment benefits as encouraging the unemployed to stay home and not look for work. If the economy tanks again, will their unemployment benefits end after 26 weeks? That's a problem when it takes 12-18 months to land a new job - if you land one at all.
