The sandhill cranes and the red-winged blackbirds are now landing in Harney County. The snow on the hay fields is melting. Bird calls fill the air near the still-closed headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
The migratory birds may not sense any difference this spring as they flock to the lakes and wetlands, but for the 16 federal employees who work at the refuge, this season will be very different from years past.
Throughout the entire 41 days of the occupation, refuge employees were not allowed to talk on the record with reporters. Out of safety concerns, they left their homes.
On Tuesday, for the first time since the armed takeover of the complex, refuge manager Chad Karges sat down with journalists along with refuge ecologist Jess Wenick.

(51,129 posts)Oregon standoff: Refuge workers had 'a sense' about visitors before takeover
By Les Zaitz March 02, 2016 at 6:06 AM
BURNS -- Weeks before anti-government militants took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, its manager and other workers kept close watch on the arrival in Harney County of protesters tied to the Bundy family.
"There was a change in the type of people you saw in the community," said Chad Karges, who oversees the bird sanctuary for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
The refuge employs its own law enforcement officer and Karges kept in touch with other police officials.
He said Fish & Wildlife Service workers in December took steps "to prepare for the unknown." ...................

The #oregonstandoff fake grand jury has apparently indicted officials. The fake Judges now need fake US Marshals.

We mustn't let this revelation pass without taking a moment to relish it. Cliven Bundy is finally where he belongsin jail. That reality could change by the time these words go public, but Mr. "Live Free-loader Or Die" is behind bars. Having been denied bail, it's likely he will stay there.
But that's not the revelation I mean to relish here today. Certainly, it is good news to know that even self-appointed "patriot" publicity hounds are not beyond the reach of justice. I've had my doubts Bundy would ever be held accountable for his stunt two years ago. Remember? A mob of verminous desert-rat gun nuts strutting their ARs around like firepower somehow implied I.Q.? Threatening, coercing, intimidating federal land management representatives and law enforcement personnel with promises of violence if they didn't abandon their efforts to get Bundy to pay the American people what he owed them?
It was the precursor to the ridiculous exhibition put on by Bundy's equally-bummy sons over at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge so recently. You could almost see the same dense self-satisfaction on Ammon's face that we grew accustomed to with Cliven the Elder. I suspect it came from an assurance they could get away with something, based on the assumption that they'd gotten away with it before.
We can be comforted to know the memory of the law is as long as its arm. .............
