Wisconsin: State denies Capital-Times request for latest job numbers


No updated Wisconsin job numbers will be coming by Tuesday’s gubernatorial recall vote.

The state Department of Workforce Development has denied a request from The Capital Times to release first-quarter 2012 data from the state's businesses on unemployment insurance.

Each quarter, some 160,000 employers across the state are required to report on how many workers they have. This information is then gathered by the Department of Workforce Development to calculate UI taxes owed.

The quarterly report provides an arguably more accurate jobs picture than the monthly survey from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, which uses information from just 3.5 percent of employers to make its employment estimates. .................(more)
