Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFound a couple of stories on the origin of the Trump protest tonight
One is a story from 2 days ago saying "Chicago braces for anti-Donald Trump protest expected to draw 10,000 people". So why were police caught so off guard?
The other is a Facebook page called "Stop Trump" which it appears served as a place to organize and discuss tactics. It says it is a student movement which is consistent with the ages of the people I saw on TV tonight.

And I heard the lying scumbag Trump proclaiming tonight on 2 different networks that they were expecting a crowd of 25,000 supporters tonight without being questioned on that by either journalist that he was talking to. The arena hosting the event has a capacity of 9500. They also let Trump say that there hadn't been any violence at his rallies, despite video to the contrary at several rallies including last night when a 78 year old man punched a black protestor who was being taken out by security.

(1,890 posts)Of course Rahm couldn't inspire them. I'm talking about what may have occurred behind the scenes. It will be interesting to watch how the media coverage unfolds. That, more than anything will alert people to who may have made sure this clash happened tonight IF someone was pulling the strings. I may be wrong but I will be looking at how this shakes out. As a country we have seen plenty of dirty tricks in campaigns so it would be foolish not to think about it. I hope it's not true but I know that it is possible so I will pay very close attention to it.

This story definitely says the Stop Trump - Chicago people were planning to demonstrate outside but had no intention of entering the arena. So it must have been was either a splinter group or outsiders who did that. But because it involved getting tickets in advance, and because they were apparently all seated together, it was clearly not spur-of-the-moment.

Organizers of Stop Trump Chicago say more than 60 groups and 100 student organizers have pledged to gather at UICs Quad at 4:30 p.m. before marching to the UIC Pavilion ahead of Trumps 6 p.m. rally. . . .
The message we want to get across is that the anti-immigrant, xenophobic hate message is not welcome in Illinois, said Lawrence Benito, executive director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, one of the groups that will be participating Friday. Were planning a peaceful demonstration of our displeasure.
At some recent Trump rallies, protesters and other observers have been forcibly removed, sometimes with Trumps own encouragement, so Chicago organizers met Tuesday to discuss safety measures. However, they do not plan to enter the event itself.
We do want to make it clear that {shutting down the event is} not one of our goals, UIC student Usama Ibrahim said. {We do not want to interfere with the ability of interested persons to hear what the presidential front-runner has to say.
