I've suspected this for the past few weeks: When all the handwringing over Trump is done, and the dust has settled, Cleveland will present to America a GOP nominee that they will expect you to be "relieved" by; an allegedly-moderate, supposedly-reasonable Episcopalian boy from the Heartland. But it's nothing more than a bait-and-switch, because if you look at the Governor's record (which I suspect most people here have already done), it becomes readily apparent that this man is neither moderate nor reasonable.
"Trump too extreme? There, there, America, here's a nice guy!" I shudder to think how many independents will be taken in by the con.

(27,315 posts)I am no fan of Kasich, but the GOP needs a nominee and the country will be better served with the lesser of FOUR evils.
So, the only question these days is "do you think that Trump is no worse than Kasich", I do not. At this point, I see Kasich as a run-of-the mill republican with whom I disagree deeply on issues, but I see Trump as somebody who should not have a chance to get the presidency ever, a dangerous individual who reeks of fascism and opportunism. The first step for him not to become president is not to become the nominee, and then for us to elect a nominee that can beat the GOP nominee.
Sorry, but history tells us we should not take people like Trump lightly and assume he cannot win. I do remember 2002 in France. My entire family, all socialists, voted for Chirac because Le Pen was such an obvious danger to the country.
This is why I hope that the GOP nominates Kasich and then, it is up to the Democratic nominee to do his/her work and show how Kasich is not the choice for the country. If our nominee is competent, it should be a no brainer. If he/she is wishy-washy and it is hard to make the distinction, we will have chosen the wrong nominee, but then, I would feel better with a Kasich president than with a Trump president, even if none is my choice.

(10,910 posts)Don't you want the Dems to make big gains in the Congress?
Hillary or Bernie vs Trump means that the Dems win in a landslide.
But, against Kasich it would be a very close election with no Dem coat tails.
So, we really need Trump to be the nominee.

(58,785 posts)first to join with John-Bircher and extreme libertarian types to form ALEC -- to get around and corrupt government of, by and for the people. An authoritarian, neocon, religious Kaisich presidency would guarantee continued transfer of wealth and power from the people to the few. And likely the continued rise of fascism -- this man combines belief in the virtues of business, religions, and duty to authority and a history of working to their ends to a very scary degree.
Conservatives would elect and reelect him. He would shape the Supreme Court for decades to come. The Kochs and the more than 700 plutocrats working with them to impose their ideology on our legal, social and economic systems like him.
Kaisich is deeply religious and believes the U.S. should promote a Jewish- and Christian-based belief system to four regions of the world: China, Iran, Russia and the Middle East. And, of course, right here. No soup for you, LGBT, women, Muslims, labor, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc!
I'll take our chances with Trump. They're a lot, lot better. In the end he'll be nothing but a sordid footnote to our history.

(12,655 posts)he is an extremist who can hoodwink some into believing he is reasonable....very dangerous.
at least trump puts it out there. and even if he were to win a ge, his past centrist positions (single payer, prochoice, no tpp) suggest he would be much less extreme than kasich. plus he is not beholden to corporate masters. kasich will willingly take orders from those he "owes" who rigged it for him.
a truly frightening prospect.

Then there's the added fact Republicans have been spoon fed Kasich is a liberal for 7 months now. Meaning he'll lose the south and the Trump vote together.

(26,355 posts)They tried to get the fix in for Jeb!, but that fizzled. They tried the same thing for Rubio, but he couldn't get traction either. Now they're trying with Kasich, and I'll say that he's less objectionable than Drumpf or the Zodiac Killer, but I suspect he won't get traction with the mouthbreathers either.

(2,603 posts)If he were to gain momentum he would likely be the most dangerous in the GE. He speaks well and can come across as a moderate if you ignore his actual record, which the vast majority of voters do. He debates well and sounds reasonable.
I won't be a bit surprised if the RNC gets organized and throws their full weight behind Kasich if he wins OH.
