Though "mooslim" is closer to the original Arabic pronunciation.

7. In the Arabic word it's a schewa, like the vowel in the 2nd syllable of "circus" or "lemon"

This is difficult for English speakers because a schewa rarely appears in that position in an English word (in general Arabic moves the stress farther back in a word than is the English instinct).

In American English buth "uh" and "ah" have a long history; "oo" seems to be more popular among Commonwealth English speakers. Also, "moosslim" with a long "oo" and hard "ss", in American English, tends to refer specifically to the Nation of Islam.

Interestingly, in Arabic the "s" sound is a hard "s" rather than a "z", but that's only retained in the "moosslem" Nation of Islam pronunciation.
