Reid says U.S. must confront extremism on public lands

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., Thursday called on Congress to confront the growing problem of violent extremism on public lands.

“This report shines a much needed spotlight on the threat posed by anti-government extremists,” he said referring to a report by the Center for American Progress.. “These dangerous groups openly flout the law and deny Americans their ability to use public lands.”

Reid referred to the actions of armed groups in Nevada and Oregon which he said, “have instigated reckless confrontations on public lands, demonstrating a real and growing problem in our country.”

He referred specifically to the April 2014 standoff at the Bundy Ranch in Bunkerville, in Southern Nevada, when BLM agents attempted to round up cattle they say are illegally grazing on federal lands. The government has charged that Cliven Bundy and his family have refused to pay grazing fees on the land for some 20 years and owe the federal government $1 million ...
