Oh No, David Brooks Just Had Another Revelation

BY CHARLES P. PIERCE

A note on the stationery from the Young Fogies Club was slipped under the door this morning. It was short, and it appeared to have been written in a hurry by Moral Hazard, the Irish setter owned for photo op purposes by New York Times columnist David Brooks.

Pierce: Master's gone around the bend. Going out to the fire escape to lick my balls until this passes.

Sincerely, M.H.

Attached was a column from Friday's Times. It began:

This is a wonderful moment to be a conservative. For decades now the Republican Party has been groaning under the Reagan orthodoxy, which was right for the 1980s but has become increasingly obsolete. The Reagan worldview was based on the idea that a rising economic tide would lift all boats. But that's clearly no longer true.

Under the bus, Dutch! I've got speaking fees to consider!

Yes, that's David Brooks, tossing Ronald Reagan onto the ash-heap of history. And, yes, I know that the Reagan Orthodoxy was all economic moonshine right from jump, but watching David Brooks panic over the locoweed that long has been a key ingredient in his lifelong ideological Maypo remains a joy to behold.

No, Mr. Brooks, you are wrong again. It was never true. It was propaganda for the elites when it was first uttered and continues to be nothing but propaganda sold to the masses.

... what Mr Brooks means to say is that, "clearly, the con no longer works." It all depends on whether he believed it or not.

Nobody, absolutely, nobody can do this like Charlie Pierce. A joy from beginning to end. Thanks for posting.

9. It was right to ignore AIDS, in the 80s. It was right to arm Al-qaeda, inthe 80s

It was right to give Iraq chemical weapons, in the 80s. It was right to sell weapons to Iran against the ban set by congress, in the 80s. It was right to run up the national debt on war spending for a fantasy war against the USSR that never came, in the 80s. It was right to cut income taxes on the wealthy and raise payroll taxes on the working class, in the 80s, it was right to engage in a war on drugs, in the 80s, it was right to end the fairness doctrine to let no ones voice but idiots be heard, in the 80s....

Reagan wasn't even good in the 1980s. So F David Brooks as per usual.

But poor David. The failure of trickle down, the birth of Trump and Cruz and all of them, are David's very own babies.

but David, it wasn't true in 1980, either.

The only tide that lifts all boats starts with the dinghies, rowboats, innertubes, and anything else small that floats, especially the people at the bottom who make this country function but are barely treading water.

Prosperity comes from higher wages for all of us, not from rich men with platinum toilet seats.

More like the Republican establishment has realized it can't get the rubes' votes with a little casual bigotry and then use their actual power to service their 1%er economic scam anymore. I wouldn't expect someone like Brooks to admit it was bullshit all along, of course, but still-- I'd love to hear his bullshit explanation for why 1+1 used to equal 4, but no longer does.
