P.S. I'm Irish-Amercan and am tired of the nasty, spoiled, anti-American Irish this old toad represents....Let's just say they
have VERY short memories.

(2,025 posts)St. Patrick's Day in Ireland is supposed to be Irish isn't it?
dorkzilla
(5,141 posts)I don't blame them though - all the parades there have American pipe and marching bands in them, and most Americans think being Irish is about being drunk, especially the "Irish Americans" that are several generations away from their roots. So they get drunk and loud and make fools of themselves. It's embarrassing. Especially the LOUD part. Jesus Christ on a cracker it's embarrassing.

(5,141 posts)Well except for the midget scene. I hate violence, and that one made me run from the living room screaming. I was upset that I didn't see it in the theater, but after I saw it on demand I realized I had saved myself from public humiliation. I'm such a baby.

(29,067 posts)Knee-jerk, self-hating Americans are legion on the Left...Being well-traveled and in the position to make realistic
comparisons, I've been able to avoid that sad place.
I'm waiting, though, how DO you know what 'most" Irish Americans think? In addition, have you ever experienced
the flat out IGNORANCE of many Europeans about America, including the Irish?
I have, but I happened to go to school in Ireland and have traveled all over Europe..
Maybe you should get out more.
dorkzilla
(5,141 posts)In fact, I was in Ireland 2 weeks ago. England as well. I too have traveled all over Europe.
I spent EVERY SUMMER of my youth into my young adulthood in Ireland and have gone back AT LEAST every other year since. I'm plenty Irish, trust me.
I betcha I know more about them than you do because they wouldn't dare share their real thoughts with someone who so obviously has a chip on their shoulder about being Amurican YEAH!!!
Their ignorance about us is vastly inferior to American's ignorance about EVERYTHING.
Have a nice day, kind person!!!!
God I LOVE the "ignore" button!!!!
whathehell
(29,067 posts)any more than you can respond to mine, lol.
Let's see if you can do better with the "chip on your shoulder about being American", shall we?
Really..Try calming down and using those things called "critical thinking skills".
1. Since when does disliking insults mean you've got a ''chip" your shoulder?....Does the sign of NOT having
one mean showing such little self-respect that you lap them up?...Does being a good Progressive mean we can never talk
back to anti-Americanism, however nasty and unfounded the statements?
If anyone has a 'chip on their shoulder' about Americans it is they, not us, and, like many others, it's only
your sad sense of inferiority AS an American that keeps you from seeing it. That combined with that typical
myopic love of all things 'Orish", lol.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)When they stop trolling for that, I'll take them seriously.
Bad Dog
(2,025 posts)You couldn't move in your pubs and restaurants for all the Chinese tourists waving the stars and stripes and all claiming to be as, if not more, American than you?
I think that's the point the old boy was trying to make.
Incidentally he wasn't given a name, but you decided to allocate him one. That's a very superior attitude to take, do you call all Hispanics Pedro?
whathehell
(29,067 posts)I'd blame the authorities, touristic or otherwise, in my OWN country for their lack of planning --- Not the people
who are boosting my fragile economy by visiting and spending money because they LIKE my country.
Interesting that you'd criticize my supposedly 'superior' attitude, while remaining silent about
someone who dislikes people BECAUSE they love his country -- How 'superior', not to mention pouty
and 'privileged', is that?
Bad Dog
(2,025 posts)And if a local news crew stuck a microphone in your face you wouldn't sound off.
Which is all he did, which is fair enough since he's supposed to live in a free country. I don't think it's the loving of his country he's complaining about so much as hijacking of his St. Patrick's Day.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)I thought my last response might be too substantive for you...Next you'll be resurrecting old insults about high horses.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)A courteous, if not, (God forbid) appreciative response to such is hardly 'deference'.
Then again, you may think a dislike of insults is a feature of "privilege".
dorkzilla
(5,141 posts)You sound just like the Americans that make me cringe with "IF IT WEREN'T FOR US YOU'D BE SPEAKING GERMAN" shit I hear being bandied about when I am in Europe.
They don't owe us any thing and they're not "begging" for green cards - they have options, trust me.
Nasty and spoiled???? Look in the mirror my friend.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)If his biggest problem with Americans, as he expresses it here, is that the Americans "love Ireland", he's
an idiotic ingrate or VERY hard up for complaints.
They don't 'owe us anything"?...Really?...It's clear you know little to nothing about Irish history, so before I
take on the exhausting task of educating you, I'll start with the small stuff and say they at least 'owe' us common courtesy,
especially since they've always got their hands out for the tourist dollar...They're not so 'fussy' when they're leaning on us for money,
and not ONLY tourist money, and if you don't believe me, you may check with native Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, who delivered
a scathing indictment of the native Irish treatment of Irish Americans in anticipation of Ireland's "Gathering" recently.
Do you even know what that was??
Whatever their 'options', on immigration, ours seems to appeal to them greatly -- They are loaded with American relatives.
I don't know what your experience in Ireland is, dear, but it seems quite slim, so I'd suggest you control that jerking knee
and speak on matters you might actually know something about.
P.S. Love the "If it weren't for us, you'd be speaking German" bit, but there's some things you need to know: 1. Ireland was neutral in WWII, so it wouldn't apply. 2. In Europe a few years ago, this very subject came up, and I will always recall the response to it by an older Englishman...He had no problem with it...In fact, his honest response to me was "They are absolutely right". .

(51,308 posts)I've been to Ireland many, many times. Some of my family lives there.
The rest of my family lives in England and Wales.
That post you made upthread was just ugly. "Begging for green cards." Sheesh.
My Irish friends and relatives are perfectly happy in Ireland, and they also hold no hard feelings toward Americans.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)to many OTHER ignorant, 'not so nice' things I've heard from the Irish about Americans,
and I don't mean the politics, I mean the people themselves.
If my post was 'ugly' it's in response to the equally ugly things I've heard and experienced from the Irish about Americans.
Glad to hear your Irish friends and relatives "hold no hard feelings toward Americans", but I'd have to ask, "why would they"?
After a centuries worth of financial and political help received from America, I'd say it's the minimum one might expect..
cwydro
(51,308 posts)Funny how you've heard so many "not so nice" things from the Irish. I have NEVER encountered that. They don't even hold it against me that my blood is English, though we do joke about that.
You ever think it's because of your own attitude?
That old story about the two couples who stopped along their way to a town and asked a man along the way, "What are the people like there?" The man answers, "Well what are the people like where you came from?" The couple answers that the people were mean and hateful where they came from. The person says, "Well, you'll find them the same where you're going."
The second couple asks the same question, and responds that the people where they came from were wonderful, nice and helpful. The man answers, "You'll find them the same where you're going."
Take a look in the mirror pal.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)No, dear, and it's not "funny' at all, and, no, my attitude wasn't negative at all -- at least at the beginning of my Irish experiences.
How nice for you that you've NEVER encountered anything negative from the Irish...That tells me your
experiences have either been few and/or superficial.
It's okay..I'm well aware of the foolish -- not to mention thankless -- over the top 'love" Irish Americans have for
a country that routinely demeans them -- except, of course, when needing that green card or tourist buck.
As for that mirror, "pal", I'd suggest YOU have a look in it. Good bye now.

(51,308 posts)I've lived there, dated an Irish woman, and some of my family lives there. I'll be there again as soon as I can.
I think YOU don't know the Irish, bud. You sound like a very unpleasant person.
Must have been a rough row to hoe when you were "studying at Trinity" with that attitude you have toward the Irish. Trinity is gorgeous. How sad you've come away with that feeling. I truly have never encountered a person with an attitude like yours toward another nationality. Very sad.
Smh. I kind of feel sorry for you.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)You imagine my attitude stems from having a 'jilted Irish lover", but don't imagine that YOUR attitude might be
affected in the opposite way by YOUR romantic and family ties, lol.
No, dear, had no hard time at Trinity, and my 'attitude" toward the Irish is in DIRECT response to THEIR attitudes, not so much
to me, personally, btw, but toward Americans in general.
Cwydro, you can find me as "unpleasant' as you want -- You don't know me at all, lol...and you'd be surprised at how
off the mark you are, if you could get beyond your OWN biases and did get to know me.
But that's okay..Oh, and please don't "feel sorry" for me, either. Most who actually know me, consider me one of the most positive
people they know...I simply tell it like I see it.
cwydro
(51,308 posts)I'm very sorry that you don't like the Irish.
I do hope that you know it's called "prejudice" when you prejudge an entire group based on an unpleasant experience with a few.
I cannot imagine having a dislike for an entire people.
But of course you do know that the Irish would not give a fig for how you feel. They're a tough group. On the phone with my ex, who said, and I quote, "Fook him, the gobshite." She was laughing as she said that.
You must have had very bad experiences there. I've traveled a lot. I have no prejudice about any nationality I've only met wonderful people wherever I've gone.
Sad for you. Probably best for you to stay here in America with your own kind.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)because you haven't.
A. I don't "dislike the Irish" -- As stated in my first post, I dislike the type of Irish who express rude, gratuitous anti-American insults. I really can't
imagine how you, or anyone can find fault with that.
Yes, I'm well aware they don't care -- which makes me wonder why YOU seem to care so much...
Please tell your ex she's needs to get her 'fookin' pronouns right, because she's got my gender wrong.....I'm laughing as I write this.
I would urge you against "counseling" me on where to go and what to do with my life, darlin'...You sound quite young and Pollyanna-ish,
"I've only met wonderful people wherever I've gone".....Really?...Gee whiz, Mr. Rogers, is the path paved with star dust too?
Keep traveling, honey, I can assure you a wider array of experiences along the way.

(51,308 posts)You sound like a youngster. Good luck with that attitude in life.
I feel bad for you.
Obviously, you've been terribly hurt by an Irish person.
Don't hold it against the entire populace, dude (or dudette, lol)
whathehell
(29,067 posts)I've just returned from two weeks in Warsaw and Zurich..
Your repeated attempts to de-legitimize my perceptions as due to being "hurt" from some big, bad Irishman are funny. In truth, dear,
you're the one who seems hurt by my comments.
Buh bye, now.
It appears the "ugly American" is still alive and well.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)it appears that the knee-jerk self-hating one is too.
Who knew that responding to a petty, baseless insults (Yes, Virginia, people claiming
to 'love' your country are generally appreciated, not insulted) would make one 'ugly".
