Graduation speeches should tell raw truth, says University of Chicago professor Charles Wheelan

(Toronto Star) Congratulations, class of 2012 — your worst days lie ahead.

Don’t try to be great. Never forget you are living on borrowed time.

These less-than-optimistic words of wisdom are the kinds of things no convocation speaker will ever tell graduates — but should, says a University of Chicago professor and author of the just-released 10½ Things No Commencement Speaker Has Ever Said.

After hearing — and writing — a number of such speeches, Wheelan said he felt the platitudes didn’t tell grads the kinds of things they needed to hear. ...................(more)
