Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFast forward to 2016 and Obama finishes his second term. Who do you want the next President to be?
(I stole the question from the "I will vote for Obama in 2012" Facebook Page)

(24,347 posts)If he does, I'll vote for him.
I entertained the idea of Deval Patrick for a while but he's from Massachusetts and would get pilloried in the press. I wouldn't mind Brian Schweitzer (Montana), but I think he's too small-market to win.
Basically anyone but Andrew fucking Cuomo.

(46,436 posts)I think I remember seeing him on MSNBC (I can't remember whose show). He seems like a reasonable kind of guy. I just didn't recall the name.

(24,347 posts)Gay marriage legalization or not, Cuomo's a wolf in sheep's clothing.

(75 posts)but it looks like it will be him:
-name recognition
-great pedigree
-popular in NY (can raise a LOT of money)
-well spoken and smart (inoffensive)
-seasoned politician with great political machine behind him
-good looking with good hair
that's all you need for the nomination...

The real surprise was that it was even so close (within 10 points) with all that corporate money sloshing around...

(4,490 posts)Honestly, I didn't know who Barrack Obama was 4 years before his election, so I imagine that could change quite a bit. There's other people I like, but just don't think they have the political smarts to actually win, or they're viewed as too "extreme" to have a realistic shot.

(8,492 posts)I'm focused on 2012, right now. Between now and '16, a whole crop of possible candidates could pop up.
Clintonian96
(1 post)We need to make gains in another region of the country. So we should have a northeastern-midwestern ticket. That way we keep New Hampshire, Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico. And maybe we can pick up Arizona and Montana. We'll get independents and rev up the Base with social liberal/moderate populist Cuomo. And with popular populist Montana Governor Schweitzer we will capture the midwest and maybe Georgia and South Carolina.

(205,282 posts)But it saddens me that we have to now play these geographic games rather than just choosing the best candidates for the job. For example, Clinton-Cuomo might work for us, but it'll never happen. And how did Bush*-Cheney ever come about?
Welcome to DU, Clintonian96! It's great to have you with us!
I had the privilege of seeing/hearing Bill Clinton in person in 2006 when he came to my little burg to campaign for my congresswoman (now senator), Kirsten Gillibrand! He's a brilliant speaker and so charismatic that it was SRO in my traditionally red district.

(43,181 posts)a) The media keeps on playing the whole "Biden is stupid and gaffe prone" story despite the fact the man is brilliant (one of the best foreign policy minds in Washington) and affable--just a likeable personality with a good back story. Yes, he could use his "inside voice" a bit more but that's about it.
and
b) He'll be in his 70s by the time 2016 rolls around. Yes, after Reagan that's not necessarily a deal killer, but combine it with the common misconception perpeuated in a), and it's pretty much a no-go.

(63,912 posts)Not that I am dissing good progressives like O'Malley. I think he's terrific. But our mindset has to move beyond the male model of president, if we are going to change the dynamic. And to do that requires a strong, progressive woman.

(10,000 posts)Gore won, but he lost
Mondale lost to Reagan
Humphrey* lost to Nixon
Wallace** lost to Truman
How much further back should we go here?
* Humphrey was VP from '65-'69 for LBJ, who was really a 1+ term President, having become President upon the death of JFK in 1963.
** Henry Wallace was FDRs VP from '41-'45. FDR ultimately served just over three terms. Harry Truman had been VP for about to months when he became President. Thus, two VPs serving a two term + President ran against one another. Neither John Nance Garner nor Henry Wallace sought the Democratic Party nomination in 1948. Wallace ran as a Progressive.
Bottom line -- in the recent history of our party, the only VPs who get elected are those who became President due to the death of another President.
