Local remembrance is vastly different than national.
Minnesota local radio and TV are honoring PRINCE, BIG TIME. People are sharing personal stories of going to the frequent fan-parties at Paisley Park & Prince sightings around town over the years. At Target. A restaurant or music club.
One guy shared about seeing Prince at the gas station with his Pink car and purple name symbol. All the windows tinted except the windshield. A curious sight, so he watched and out comes Prince. He got out and pumped the gas himself. Security was with him. Waived hello, got back in and drove the car himself. He is loved in his home town. Not a day went by that people did not stop to take a pictures of Paisley Park.
People are gathering at Paisley Park and First Avenue. He is being honored and remembered as part of the Minnesota family and Minnesotan's are a part of his. He embraced living in Minnesota, he said, "I wanted peace."
Purple is everywhere! News reporters are wearing purple. The Twins stadium is lit up purple. First Avenue is where he first started playing big crowds. There is a an all-night dance party for free. It starts at 11:00 pm tonight. No one will be parking in his long-time permanently designated parking space.
The local reporting is by far more homey than the national reporting. Locally, its his community remembering, sharing, loving and honoring him with everyday people sharing their stories of their famous amazing musical genius artist family member.

(24,931 posts)He went to the same junior high as me (Bryant, but several years apart) and Central High School. I would say his home town was Minneapolis and his adopted town was Chanhassen.

(14,807 posts)I am from Minneapolis. Not currently living there but was born and raised there. We claim him as own own in this City. And proudly so. We didn't even mind that he moved to Chanhassen to have his studio and a home as he always spent time in Minneapolis, where he was born.
In 1984 he had his birthday party in my studio. To be fair it was actually in an artist warehouse in downtown Mpls. and several of us opened up our studios for around 100 people for a big party. I did spend some small time with him. Nice sweet person. Very frail and tiny. His friends puked on my paintings. I was not too crazy about that.
I am slightly miffed at him right now though as I was hoping he was above addiction issues. Such a smart man. A gifted man like no other musician that I had seen ever. Damn his little purple problems. Sorry. Venting.

(6,344 posts)Beautiful link and consistent with his home of Minnesota honoring him.
His private generosity is being revealed. He gave a lot of money to Chanhassen schools and they put it into their music department. Today the kids showed up to school all wearing purple!
