Sears (SHLD) move (see the list of the stores) comes atop a previous announcement that it will close 50 other stores. Sales have been falling and Sears had a disappointing holiday sales season.
"The decision to close stores is a difficult but necessary step as we take aggressive actions to strengthen our company, fund our transformation and restore Sears Holdings to profitability," said Sears Holdings CEO Edward Lampert in a statement.
All of the Sears stores and nearly all of the Kmart stores will close in late July, the retailer said. Two Kmart stores will close in mid-September. The closing Kmart and Sears stores will hold liquidation sales starting May 12 and April 29.

(43,049 posts)assholes maximizing short term profits. Nobody running the how has a selling background.
My local K-Mart is losing vast amounts of sales to Target and Wal-Mart, even when it has better merchandise at cheaper prices. Really, I've done comparisons, and K-Mart is just avoided.
Why, you might ask? Well, the first problem is that the store is dingy. Even dollar stores know that a fresh coat of paint is worth it, and Target has just the right lighting and display style to keep people in there. BJ's next door to the K-Mart is kinda dingy, but it's by design, not just looking like they can't afford the paint. BJ's is even kicking Costco's ass. When Costco first opened, i was sure they were going to put everyone out of business, but I dropped my membership and now the parking lot is empty most of the time. But that is another story of retail horror.
Merchandise is OK, but rarely changes much. The buyers seem stoned.
And, the local K-Mart recently closed down its weekly flyer-- costs too much, they say. A retail store without a weekly sales flyer? Odd, and the store stays empty, but they're not wasting money on that flyer...
This is even before Amazon and other online giants are stealing everyone's sales. Sears virtually invented home shopping ages ago, but the assholes running it now are running it like a schlock shop and aren't even trying.
