Planning Commission denies Sons of Confederate Veterans plan for massive flagpole (FL)

... The request from Calvin Hart, a commander of the local Sons of Confederate Veterans camp, was to use a sliver of property at 6785 W. Moncrief Rd, right next to an Interstate 295 overpass, to raise a 75-foot flagpole that he said would honor Floridas veterans.
Planning Commission member Abel Harding expressed concern the flagpole was part of a Sons of Confederate Veterans statewide campaign to raise large Confederate flags near interstate highways. The campaign began, according to news reports, after then-Gov. Jeb Bush lowered a Confederate flag from the state capitol.
The Planning Commission unanimously denied Harts request, citing safety concerns with a large flag waving right over the interstate in a residential area.
City lawyers told the commission members they could not deny the request solely based on the content of any potential flags. They could only object to the flagpole ...
