A top staffer to Donald Trump suggested in a closed-door meeting with members of the Republican National Committee on Thursday that the GOP frontrunner has adopted a "persona" to attract voters.
Paul Manafort, Trump's recently hired chief strategist, told RNC members on Thursday that the Trump who conducts business deals and outlines political strategy behind closed doors is very different from the one who has dominated the 2016 campaign using incendiary, divisive, and occasionally racist and chauvinistic rhetoric. Manafort's comments were made in a private meeting, a recording of which was leaked to the New York Times and the Washington Post.
"Trump is an outsider, that's why maybe you don't know, but he's sitting in a room talking business and when he's talking politics in a private room, it's a different persona," Manafort said. "When he's out on the stage and he's talking about the kinds of things he's talking about on the stump, he's projecting an image that's for that purpose."
Manafort suggested that those two Trumps will merge "in the course of the next several months," as he works to lock up the Republican nomination before the party's convention in July and begins to focus on the November election.

(118,691 posts)would support him rather than Cruz is because Cruz is creepy. Cruz means the stuff he says: "America is at its best when it is on its back...." and, the way he doesn't get along with people, makes me think he is a bit more sadistic than any President the USA has seen in the modern era. I guess the GOP has a choice between being laughed at by the country by supporting Trump or horrifying the world with Cruz.

(31,849 posts)which trump will govern (if American loses its collective mind and elects him) ... the "Part" persona, the "New Part" persona, or the persona to be presented.
I can't believe anyone thinks this is a smart strategy ... "Hey guys! I was just pretending to be a loud-mouthed, know-nothing bigot to get your votes in the primaries. This is the real me!"
That should really piss off his current supporters that loved his loud-mouthed, know-nothing bigot persona ... and give major pause to anyone liking what they hear next.

(10,857 posts)I remember reading somewhere that one candidate-- Harry Truman, maybe?-- used to change the dialect he used when delivering the very same stump speech, depending on where his train was stopped. When he knew he was being recorded he would default to flat midwest.
But that doesn't work anymore. Mitt Romney tried every conceivable combination of lie and deception and all that did was create a critical mass against himself, so that eventually he was running against himself and we all gleefully pointed it out every day for months. I think it was the ridicule that swamped him, and he probably did a lot worse than our crooked election system's results showed.
Trump is going to be the same way. He's been a vile presence in media every disgusting day for a year, now, and every attempt to move away from his vile statements will be haunted by the Digital Recording of Donald Trump Past.
Republican leadership knows it, too. They've long been planning a three-candidate race designed to steal it in Congress and they'll try that either with Trump as the nominee or Trump as the spoiler. But either way, he's still just the chump that pushes them close enough to steal it and hand it to Paul Ryan.
