Obama ask the republicans one simple question in a sit down at the White House...
Even though nothing ended up being accomplished by having the face to face chat in Obamas office, the president tried his best to get Republicans to do their job of helping him pick Justice Scalias replacement when he asked the GOPs top brass if they had any recommendations. By asking them this one simple question: Who do you have in mind? the Republicans went speechless. They didnt have any. They couldnt produce one single name. And its sad.
The truth is, they dont want to produce a name. Their entire focus up to this point has been to obstruct, dodge, obstruct, and then do some more dodging. Mcconnell has already driven the point home publicly that he wont even consider a nominee in Obamas final year in office. A face to face meeting surely wasnt going to change that, even if the president bended over backwards for them which he did.
This is leaving President Obama with very little options since hes getting no help from Republicans. He was even forced to highlight the relevant part of the U.S. constitution on Tuesday and show it to Republicans, reminding them that its their job to help.
How hard is that? Just do your damn job. If the president is willing to let you have a say in who he will nominate, take advantage of it. Show your base that youre at least fighting to get who you want on the court. Dont tell America youre not reasonable, which is really the only point theyre driving home.

(65,616 posts)They had no reply, because doing nothing is the primary role of a conservative. That and obstructing the government from serving the people. Oh and helping cover up crimes committed by their paymasters.

(113,059 posts)exactly what GOP expected when they came up with the plan. They know how to manipulate some of our own on the left and make them sing the words they wrote for them.

The Republicans just happened to be the party most susceptible to the Oligarch's Think Tanks schemes and conspiracies early on, being pro-business, greedy and having the FEVER (Fuck EVeryone EveRywhere). The Democrats are marching along this path pretty well, also, like Republicans from the 90's. Not as bad, of course, but something that all Democrats should be concerned about.

(58,785 posts)presumably the GOP and other groups would go to court to block it, and...? Would an appointment "filled" by this administration be finally confirmed or rejected by SCOTUS during the next? What would be the pros and cons for doing this?
Beartracks
(12,810 posts)Their "job" is to advise and confirm the appointee, not actively block him/her. If they can't be bothered to do their actual job, why should any court lend them credence when they try to do the opposite of their job?
"We couldn't be bothered to get off our a**es for a Senate hearing. But we won't just sit by and not sue you!"
Anyhow, I don't actually know if the President can "fill" a SCOTUS vacancy this way...
