LANSING, MI A growing number of Michigan Republicans are bullish on New York businessman Donald Trump's chances at turning a consistently blue state red come the November presidential election.
Although the latest poll data still shows likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton with a double-digit lead against Trump in the state, many are acknowledging that Michigan shouldn't necessarily be treated as a given as the general election approaches.
Political news website Real Clear Politics shows Clinton averaging a lead of 10.5 percentage points in polls pitting her against Trump conducted between Feb. 22 and March 24.
But Trump's campaign recently listed Michigan as one of its targets for the general election, and new national polling shows Trump and Clinton in a statistical dead heat.
In a recent interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Trump national convention manager Paul Manafort included Michigan on a list of Democratic-leaning states that could give Trump the possibility to expand the electoral map in his favor, listing independents, crossover Democrats and supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders as potential Trump voters.

Living here in Michigan I can say that it is a real possibility.

(29,876 posts)Michigan carries a lot of recognition with it.
A lot of work will need to be done on the ground here to keep us blue in the presidential.
One possible positive is the Flint debacle that solely rests on the republicans shoulders.
As it look now, it is going to be a squeaker.

In 2012, Libertarians took 1% of the vote. So if the electorate remains roughly the same, the source of that extra 9% is critical.
If Libertarians tend to pull in the progressive left, Trump could win in a landslide.
If Libertarians pull in pull in Corporate Conservatives, Clinton or Sanders would take it in a landslide.

(1,683 posts)It won't be the Flint voters.
It will be the blue collar Democrats in Oakland and Macomb County who are wooed by the chance that he might do something to stop jobs from leaving SE Michigan.
These are the same voters that gave George Wallace the Democratic primary victory over McGovern and Humphrey in 1972. They could care less about the people in Flint.

(3,111 posts)Seriously people. Look at our failures as a party since Bill Clinton's second term. We held the majority in the House and Senate almost every year for 62 years prior to that. Since Bill Clinton's second term, we have held the majority only for four years.

New Dem policies suck up the wazoo! And they are trying to use them as the template again. Against a trickster like Trump! Not a good idea at all. And all this with legal issues hanging over Hillary's head.

(17,064 posts)I lmao at prognostications saying Clinton wins Florida. Not going to happen. And she won't get Mich and a few other 'swing states'. And what were some reliably blue states will become swing states. This is particularly bad for down ticket races...in a year when we should pick up seats, we're going to lose them or hold even at best.

Michigan is not going to go for Trump. Only the obvious racist troll types are going for him. Even most Republicans I know say they'll vote third party (Libertarian.)
Easy fucking answer
