Nixon illegally contacted the South Vietnamese government ahead of the election to hurt the Democratic chances by promising them a better deal if they would refuse to participate in the Paris peace talks and drag on the war a little longer. That was revealed last year in secret tapes made public and that Lydon Johnson refused to go to the press for fear it would hurt the institution of the Presidency forever. We know what Reagan did in the way of his October surprise to defeat Carter.

I wouldn't put it past the Republicans to have contacted major companies to get them to wait to hire personnel and retool or expand until after the election, promising them fewer regulations and lower taxes if the Corporate Raider wins.
