Campus rapist given lenient sentence to avoid "severe impact on him"

?w=595

Former Stanford University athlete Brock Allen Turner, 20, raped an unconscious woman behind a dumpster. Prosecutors wanted him put away for 6 years, but the judge, Aaron Persky, gave him 6 months to avoid being unnecessarily harsh on the boy. He'll be out in a few weeks.

After a jury convicted Turner of sexually penetrating an intoxicated and unconscious person with a foreign object, prosecutors asked a judge to sentence him to six years in California prison. Probation officials had recommended the significantly lighter penalty of six months in county jail, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

The judge, Aaron Perksy, cited Turner’s age and lack of criminal history as factors in his decision, saying, “A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him … I think he will not be a danger to others.”

This was described as a "brazen" attack: he was physically forced off of his victim, then chased down and detained by passers-by until police arrived. Yet this column, by Scott Herhold, was the sort of coverage he enjoyed in the press:

No mugshots in county orange available? They used a sweet, smiling, innocent looking yearbook photo to show exactly what sort of people are entitled to leniency?

Unconscious girl behind a dumpster and forcibly stopped and chased down by 2 older students sounds like a very shitty scenario that really should be more difficult to get away with.

Maybe Trump can build a wall outside fraternities?

It's supposed to have a "severe impact" on offenders. It's why we put them there, in the hope that they won't want to go back and won't do it again. Sometimes, it even works that way.

This punk will only know that nobody cares about punishing rapists.

I hope this sentence is appealed. I hope this deeply biased judge is off the bench.

No excuse for this kinda sentence. Guess fucking what? You rape someone, there should absolutely be a negative impact on you. When do we stop worrying about damaging these entitled little shits life plans and start focusing on the damage they've done to their victims? This story made me want to throw up.

If you see an unconscious girl lying outside by a dumpster and you think "hey, I'm going to rape this girl" instead of "I should get some help for her", then you are a terrible person and should not be allowed around normal people.

He's right. What thought process leads someone to thinking that it is their right to rape a young woman who is completely helpless?

because they have an illness -- an addiction to drugs. Think that doesn't impact their future? Try getting a job when you have zero connections and have to answer "yes" to the "Ever convicted of a crime?" question on the employment app.

I hate this. That entitled piece of shit is being coddled while that judge no doubt enforces strict sentencing on others. And the predator will no doubt use daddy's considerable connections to land a cushy job.

Just another example of the vast gulf between the haves and have nots that characterizes this country.

Now, Turner’s father, Dan, has reportedly wrote a letter in opposition to his son’s sentence, blaming the case for damaging Brock’s “happy go lucky” nature and loss of appetite.

...

The letter was posted on Twitter by Michele Dauber, the Stanford law professor who helped draft new university procedures for penalizing sexual violence.

"totally committed to educating other college age students about the dangers of alcohol consumption and sexual promiscuity."

Sexual promiscuity? What Brock Turner did to that woman had nothing to do with sexual promiscuity. He is a depraved individual.

So disgusting to see a human life given the name, '20 minutes of action'. Think I might have to write a nasty letter to someone, this really pisses me off even more.

As usual, the female victim is not even given a moments consideration. No apology or even a hint of the victim in that letter. Broken and shattered? The rapist?

The father should be ashamed to write that letter, but all that is important to him is his little rapist Brock the sex offender.

but what makes me angrier is the assertion by the father that his son has never been violent. The act or rape and/or sexual assault is violent. His victim had scrapes and bruising, that doesn't happen non-violently.

ation! Nobody is ever too intoxicated not to know what rape is...the father and son need some serious therapy and of course all they care about is the son's 'reputation' and not the poor victim left behind the dumpster.

If I were in charge of punishment, they would, father and son, be forced to listen to the powerful words of the victim whose life Brock shattered everyday for the next ten years. Maybe then it would sink in. Shame, shame, Dan Turner.

Victim's impact letter. She talked about the cruelty of how she was treated by the system. She used logic, also, to explain why Brock the Rapist's version was a lie. The judge had to hear it, too, but he didn't give a shit about her.

At least he's a registered sex offender now.
